What is the general opinion on GM barrels? On average, are they accurate? I ordered one about 6 weeks for my 77/22 and it finally arrived this week, I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet as it's still in getting fitted, and the stock re-bedded, but I was a little disapointed with the overall finish. The flutes looked quite rough - as if they had been cast. And I had to get it recrowned. But the bore is highly polished, so I'm hoping it'll shoot at least.

I have a stainless fluted on one of my 10/22's. It is the one with the fire sights.
It is very accurate.
I do agree that the surface finish is odd. Including the flutes.

DBT,
Your going to be very happy - I'm got a 10/22 Mag with a GM barrel on it - I've only heard, and experienced good things.

They're considered the best bang for the buck for 10/22 bbls. Got one of the fire sight bbls also and it's a very accurate bbl.

That's good news....thanks for the replies. I was getting a little worried, mainly by the rough external finsh, but I can live with that as long as it shoots. I should be able to get it out to the range in a couple of weeks, so I'll post the results then.

finish on the outside sucks, but the shooting (ie groups) do not. You will be happy.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

finish on the outside sucks, I thought they may have sent their reject stock out to the British colonies...out of sight, out of mind...and no comebacks. I suppose the external finish must be some cost cutting measure, but I'm sure most people would be willing to pay a few extra dollars to get a barrel that looks as good as it shoots...oh well. :shrugs:

Well I finally got my rifle back from the gunshop a couple of weeks ago, and tried it out at the range - I have to say that I'm very happy with the barrel. Not only does it shoot well, the external appearance also polished up nicely. It turns out that the rough appearance was only on the surface - residue from the CNC machining process - which cleaned up very well with a bit of polishing using scotch bright.
The first groups were a little erratic, running at around 3/4'' to an inch for 5 shots at 50yds. But it soon settled down to 1/4'' to 1/2''
I'm hopeful that will further improve with shooting, and I suppose, finding the ammo it prefers.

DBT,
I don't think that Green Mountain barrels are lapped when they are sold. You might consider running a tight fitting patch loaded with JB Bore Paste down the barrel 100 strokes to polish it. It will make the barrel shoot better. Then you will have to try different brands of ammo to see what shoots best. Wolf Match Target shoots very well in many of my 22 Rimfire rifles.

I think JB Bore Bright, available from Brownell's, may be more suitable for barrel lapping. It is a much finer abrasive and gives a very smooth finish. A little goes a long way. I usually start by thououghly cleaning the barrel, then running a tight patch with the Bore Bright through about 6 times. Nice full, even strokes. I did that on my Ruger MK III512 and it changed it to a tack driver. I haven't seen the need to lap my Green Mountain barrel.
