Looking for .223 size flip tops, 50 or 100's. Used to pay $2 a piece for them, now I'm seeing them around $4. Figure someone must still have them at reasonable prices, but I don't know who.
Any suggestions?

Well that’s what you asked for 50 or 100. The 100 is 3.50 per buying 3. Never saw the need for 100 round rifle boxes, fact is I have a few100 round pistol boxes that never get used as zip locks and plastic ammo cans work much better. By the way I used to pay 20 bucks a pound for powder now its 28-35.

Kinda like the people that paid $70.00 +
for a brick of promo .22 ammo.
That's a big part of the reason why a
$2.00 plastic box is now $4.00 and a
pound of powder is $30 00

The National Metallic boxes in bulk at Midway are the cheapest I've found in general. I have dozens of them. I prefer the MTM with the actual hinges, rather than just a flexible strip, but I'm a sucker for bargains. I'll use the NM boxes until the cheaper hinge fails.

Sorry Swifty - you're right. I'm sure that when I posted it I was trying to be flexible, and didnt even remember adding the 50 boxes. Shame on me, and thank you.

Ill check Bass Pro. I used to buy them for work at a pricey local shop for 2.29 (Frankford Arsenal) recently. Its just not worth it to buy 10 or 12 for myself at today's prices.

$4 is not reasonable?

Its all relative - when you're used to paying two bucks or so for a single box, four bucks each is crazy when you want a dozen...

Until you find boxes that meet your price requirement, you might think about going to the local range and rummaging through trash cans to find empty factory ammo boxes.

One recommendation: Stay away from Berry boxes. I thought they'd be a cheap alternative to MTM. I bought two for a 35 Whelen project and dropped one on the floor. It shattered like glass. MTM would have just bounced.

The Berry .223 boxes are too short for any reloads over AR mag length. Work ok for ARs, not ok for bolt guns where you might be chasing lands.

That's been my experience too.

Also, I bought a Berry two-tone 100 round .223 box that put out a really strange chemical smell, stuck to the ammo too.

MTM 100 round boxes are the best thing going imho.

Stay away from Plano also. The latching tabs will break too easily.

The price is the price. What's it worth to have something that works well for you for years instead of settling to save a few bucks? I just bought a bunch of boxes on Amazon; no more scrounging around looking for one. Got some labels too, another convenience item worth paying a bit for.

I have some MTM boxes for my hunting guns that are still going after 30 years. The newer ones with the hinge are the cats meow. Never even thought about price. Again I only use 50 count in rifle, but that’s just me. If and when the old one start going south I will have no problem just ordering even at 5 bucks per. Anything that costs 5 bucks and gives 10+ years of service is a bargain.

I have probably 800-900 rounds (give or take) of reloads that I got from a friend that's currently loose in thin clear plastic tubs. I think I'll price the heavy paper ammo boxes that come with cardboard or plastic inserts. If that doesn't make sense I'll buy MTM or Frankford boxes at whatever price.

FYI - we've been reusing the 1 piece Frankford .223 100's for years at work to ship small parts back and forth to a laser welding vendor. Zero issues. We only buy new to replace lost ones or when we need more volume. I think they would hold up to reloading use for a long time also. Might want to pick them up if you were to come across some somewhere.

I picked up a 50 for $2.89 and a 100 for 3.89 at Bass Pro yesterday.They still had 3-4 each left when I left.

Sign up for sales at Dvor.com. You have to wait for them to go on sale, but I've gotten them for about $2 per.

I've bought the cheap boxes. I'll only buy the boxes with hinges now. They are worth the extra $'s

If you buy MTM boxes in bulk at Midway they can be had for around $2 a box. That's what I did with several sizes some years ago, when they were even chaper, and still generally have some of the right size on hand for a new project.

These threads always kind of remind me of one where a guy mentioned how much he'd paid for his brand-new pre-'64 Model 70 Winchester in 1950-something. Whereupon several other guys (not just one) said they would buy a LOT of pre-'64s at that price. Of course, the guy that bought the rifle was making less than $400 a month back then...
