At 91 passed in his Lazy Boy. Was still running 250 pairs and haying a little more than a section of alfalfa under wheel lines. Despised Beldings Ground Squirrels and would furnish ammo if one displayed reasonable skills with his 22 LR. We spent many hours solving the worlds problems sitting in the fields waiting for squirrels to emerge.
Did not owe a dollar to anyone, and I wish he had retired at about 80 to relax on the beach with a margarita in hand. All he knew was work though. He wore out two sets of knees and hips, said getting old was Hell, but his dream was to die working on the place.
Miss him already,

Wow, 2 sets. He didn't let dust settle around him wearing them out.
But what a way to go, and met his goal in my mind. 500 head is a good spread , and in your part of Oregon a very nice place on earth to do so. And a section of hay, he didn't sit in that Lazy boy much.
I had heard stories about the free 22 lr, never got offered any but a very neat situation where a farmer appreciates us having fun and helping them too.
Sorry for your loss

Folks over in the High Desert country are a different breed than most folks over here in the valley. Your fiend sounds like my kind of man. The wife keeps reminding me of all the rebuild surgeries on hips, knees and shoulders and wants me to slow down bu I tell her I would rather go to meet my Father worn out rather than rusted out. I had a older friend who raised alfalfa at Christmas Valley. He said I could archery hunt for elk as long as I stayed in his trailer in the corner of the field adn got up once a night to chase the elk out of the field in the middle of the night! Between them, the ground squirrels and the speed goats he lost a lot of hay every year.

Condolences for the loss of your friend, 1minute. Good life lived.
My great grandmother lived to 106 and I really hope I do not get an over abundance of her longevity genes !!!

The older I get, the more I admire people like that. Maybe because I come to realize a little more what it takes to keep going.
My condolences for your loss.
I could wish a lot of things on my worst enemy but neuropathy ain't one of them.

Did not owe a dollar to anyone, and I wish he had retired at about 80 to relax on the beach with a margarita in hand. All he knew was work though. Sorry to hear of his passing. But, if he'd quit working, he may not have lived to be 91. Many don't. I really never plan to fully retire. I need to stay busy. He had a long life, doing what he wanted. Lot's can't say that. Sorry for the loss of your friend.
