Do any of you learned folks know when/if Marlin checkered their lever actions? I know the new ones do have it, but I am more interested in circa the late 70s early 80s. Specifically, the Model 444. J

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

I think they started checkering them around the late 80’s or early 90’s. Not sure if all models got the treatment at the same time and I’m most familiar with the 1895s.

I prefer no checkering, but that's just me.

I believe that the 336A or 336 ADL was checkered at the factory beginning in the late 40's or early 50's. I have one with a J serial number signifying 1952 as the year of manufacture. Nice walnut stock with nice factory checkering.

I have an H prefixed 39a with checkered butt stock and forearm. Pretty sure it's a '51 model.
