Got my bullet hollow pointer today courtesy of "Campfires" Dinny. I will be attempting to hollow point some 220 grain FN Speer .358 bullets for use in my .356 Winchester after I test them. I keep hearing how they don't open up on shots if velocity drops off. Due to the small case capacity and my old eye sight and capabilities I won't be poking at moose past 200 yards.

Drill and then use a countersink to open the point.

Good idea on counter sink, I was just going to use a bigger bit for part of it if needed.

Let us know how they work. I recently picked up a BUNCH of Speer 180 and 220 grain JFP that I was thinking about for use in reduced 350 Remington mag loads.
Looking at 356 or 358 Win velocities.

A son of one of my friends used the 220 grain Speer flat nose to take two large Yukon River moose with his .358 Norma Mag. One shot was through the lung into the off side shoulder at close to 200 yards and the other was through both lungs at around 100 yards and that was a pass through. He was impressed with how tough the bullet was. I hear the 180 grain Speer flat nose is also tough.

I suspect the 220 grain version would work at .350 Rem velocities and the 180's at reduced velocities. Hopefully I will eventually try hollow pointing these bullets. For some reason there is not a lot of info on actual users of the 220 grain Speer.

The 180gr Speer needs 2400+ fps. It's a tough bullet too.

In my tests I have found the countersink is unneeded with enough velocity. It works well to ensure expansion in my subsonic tests.

Thanks, Dinny

Interesting, I knocked dime sized holes completely through a white tail buck at 156 yards from a 35 Remington that left at 2175 fps over leverevolution powder, he bled good, don't think the unaltered 220gr Speers slowed down much, first shot knocked the dog snot out of the white oak tree the buck had bedded beside.

Redneck homemade HP's work just fine, just tested the theory in Tanzania, I filed the semi spritzer tip on 400gr A Frames flat, hit the flat with a center punch, used an eighth inch bit and drilled holes a quarter inch deep, the homemade HP's hit the same POI as the regular A Frames at 2400 fps from my 400 H&H, hit a big tom Leopard through both shoulders at 70 yards from the ground blind, he was DEAD before his paws left the limb, he landed with a hard thud at the bottom of the tree, my PH was very happy.

I loaded my 35 with the big Speers because nilgai was on the list for that years hunting, after they're shot up, i'll go back with the 180gr Speers at 2400 fps for all deer, hog and black bear hunting with that rifle, the 180's at 2400 will also give 300 yard hunting capability, about maxed out [low velocity] at 225 yards with the big 220's.

With the 220gr Speers leaving at 2175 fps, +3 at 100 zeros at 175, and 2 inches down on 200 yard steel.

I've been using180 grain Speer bullets in a Marlin 336 35 Rem for a long time. No published 35 Rem loads reach 2400+ fps and it's killed lots of deer and a bear over the years from almost point blank range to over 100 yds. The bullets expands at 35 Rem velocities and just plain works.

If the brown bears didn't hang around the same places I hunt my bullet choices would be different. I would use my .356 Win. and Alaska Bullet Works 180 grain bonded bullets for moose on down and would not of made up a .348 Ackley Improved on a new Winchester Mod. 71. Supposedly 2,350 fps is doable with the 220 grain Speer and WW 748 in my .356 and I hear of higher velocities with a couple of other powders.

I have some of the 250 grain Alaska Bullet Works bullets for the .356 and will keep them for the bears if they need it. Fortunately, that is seldom needed. All in all I think a stout 200 grain or 220 grain bullet weight is a better choice for the .356 Win. do to it's small case capacity, which limits desired impact velocities.

With my ability and eye sight I think 200 yards is my max on a standing broad side stationary moose. So I need what ever load I am using in a peep sighted lever gun to have sufficient impact velocity out to 200 yards. I think I can do that with the 220's especially if I do a modest hollow pointing to the bullets. The 250 grain Alaska Bullet Works bullet out of my .348 Improved will probably expand much further then I should be shooting at an un wounded animal.

I still plan on resizing some 220 Speers to .348 diameter for my .348 Improved and if they shoot ok they are another option. I don't plan on hollow pointing the 220's when I eventually resize some for my .348 Improved. But, the 250 grain ABW bullet will be my "go to" bullet for the .348 Improved.

Slowly finishing up projects and should be in the loading room big time in a couple weeks, a wonderful winter project. That and my big pool table will keep me busy during the long Alaskan winter and virus lock down.

If Barnes made a X bullet in 180 or 200 grain for the .356 Win. or 200 and 220 grain for the .348 I would lay in supply. I doubt that will ever happen.
