In laws live in St George and also have a place at Brian Head. Wondering if there are any decent hunting opportunities close by?

Lots and lots of hunters. Are you talking about big game? It has great big game hunting but require applying for tags. I know lots of Vegas guys and also CA guys that apply for tags in Southern Utah so you'll have lots of competition for those tags. Hopefully, you're not too old and will draw something before you can't hunt no more .

Some of the biggest mulie bucks that I have ever seen have come from SW Utah.
Every day on this side of the ground is a win.

You may want to apply for tags in the Pine Valley area for mule deer.

You are putting the cart in front of the horse. Tags first which will more than likely be a while.

I'd just go to the hardware store and ask to buy a Monroe mountain elk license for the rifle season.

I keep looking at this thread and chuckling. I lived in Utah on and off for a few decades. There is LOTS of great hunting in SW Utah. Some of the best trophy hunting, really. But not for you.
I have a nephew that runs a hunting outfit down there. He wouldn't even give me a slot without a deposit and a two-year+ wait. That's the way it is: all private, in demand, and all pricey.
I belong on eroding granite, among the pines.

The girls are a lot easier and cheaper than non-resident tags.
