After a couple of days in Harrisburg this week I’m considering an Idaho or Montana elk hunt. Our first elk hunt.
Shots are up to 400 yards.
I have a BLR in 7 mm as well

Comments from experienced elk hunters with the BLR.

Thank you. I

Have at it! If it shoots well for you and you like to carry it I can’t ever see a point where you’d have any negatives to carrying it.

I assume you have a 7 Rem Mag right now? Either or are more than plenty for elk. Congrats on getting your first elk hunt underway.

Hi

I do have a 7mm BLR and took a moose in 2018 at 269 yards in Newfoundland.

I was considering a new rifle (why not) and being a lefty I was leaning towards a .300 wm or WSM.

It’s going to be a busy travel year next year!

Thank you.

Any excuse for a new rifle is good by me. I’d think a 300 WSM in a BLR would be a handy package and being a lefty makes it even better.

Took my last shrias moose with a 270 wsm BLR.
Followup shots from the prone position take some maneuvers.

I've mentioned before that I have had trouble with BLRs in the past. ( failure to fire in some conditions) Last fall a hunter that I've guided a few times brought me up a stainless BLR in 450 marlin. I'm a lefty too. Anyway I really like the way the gun handles and it is very accurate. But it isn't reliable. I carried it this winter on the trapline because I can hunt moose until January 31st. As soon as the weather started to cool off, I started having misfires. I cleaned the gun several times with brake clean, but it still misfires sometimes. Usually if I re-cock the hammer after a misfire, it will fire the second time, but its a problem I just cant tolerate so it will become a summer only gun. I prefer lever guns so I bought a Winchester 1886...no problems with it.

Interesting, I’ve read your previous posts regarding jamming.
I purchased a new .358 and shot 36 rounds at the range and was fine. The ammo was Buffalo Bore.
I also have a 1996 BLR in 7 mm magnum and tried various loads and so far so good.

That being said the SAKO Finnlight 300 Wsm jammed and the bullet shoulder was dinged.
My son was lucky, one shot caught the moose’s heart, a running shot very close. Gun was sold. The store fixed it.

Ive actually never had problems with the BLR jamming, just failure to fire when the trigger is pulled.

Abbydog, I have a nice older scoped Win 70 in 300 WM I'd trade for the 358 BLR if you still have it. I'm next door in Upstate NY. I have 2 300 WM so this one can go for something I'd use in the Adirondacks. I PM'd you.

I have 3 , a .243, a .270 win and a .450 Marlin.
I really like them, the .270 is my sheep/ elk rifle. I prefer the takedowns for cleaning purposes. A clean rifle doesn't misfire or jam, imo

I do not know where you're headed for your elk hunt but my longest shot ever for elk was about 225 yards while hunting the edge of a burn within the Bear Lodge Mountains of Wyoming. My elk rifle is a Savage levergun in .308 shooting plain 180 grain soft tip ammo. Most of my shots are more like 85 to 150 yards at most. I always shoot twice into the chest organs for maximum damage and quick kill.

The 300 MAG is a big gun to shoot well. If muzzle jump is a concern, I suggest sending your BLR to Michigan for MagnaPorting. No ugly device to thread on nor extra loud report for your eardrums to deal with. MagnaPorting does not even mar the blueing!

i have a 300 Win.mag in a s.s BLR the rifle shoots excellent i would not hesitate hunting elk with it my longest elk kill was a medium bull elk at 375 yards with a 270 W. mag. and my 300 Win mag. is just as accurate. when people talk about mis fires in a rifle i myself and some others during real cold weather have had more trouble with a 700 Remington in the winter calling critters than any other brand rifle,so i never use a 700 in the cold snowy season anymore in Minnesota . but i do use a AR 10 243 Win. , AR 15 223 or my Ruger #1 220 Swift these 3 never ever fail me in the coldest snowy season.
