Ya, WY.
I have very little time for antelope this year so I choose a hunt with an early start date and took the first 12 inch buck I saw. He may not even be that biglaugh. I never measured him. I just wanted the meat.

Great stuff MCH !! Well done.

Nothing open here, but waterfowl & black bear yet.

Well, that's not true, archery deer opened last week, but I won't get after anything till things cool down.

Roll on October !

Thanks Tom - I'll check that one out. I also need all the eye relief I can get and have been limiting myself to 1-4 and 1.5-5 straight tube scopes on No. 1s for that reason.

Bow season came in last Friday. Saturday afternoon my son gave it a try and he was only in the tree for an hour on his first hunt of the year.

Thanks guys, Fire was 2012 I believe. Was a great bedding area on the east side of a mountain but they seem to still use it heavily despite no shade

Pretty typical of a fat covered mature alpine buck. Once they get off the top they are lean by the end of the rut. Pretty good eats for the critters up on the peaks tho.

I got more pics but he looked biggest in that first one and the shadows weren’t on my face

Calvin;
Top of the morning to you sir, I hope the weekend was a good one and this finds you and yours well.

While I'm always reluctant to single out anyone on a thread such as this - and may I interject congratulations to all successful hunters! - I'm somewhat gob smacked at the size of that Sitka! cool

The one I killed on Haida Gwai was maybe - maybe - a third of that one. Actually the Columbia Blacktail I got on the Gulf Islands was nowhere near that for size either.

That thing is in the class of the bigger Blacktails from up in Pemberton country.

Anyways thanks for sharing the photo of the hunt as I've learned something now sir as I didn't know they could get that size.

Thanks again and again hearty congratulations to all the successful hunters this fall. Good luck to you all on your remaining hunts.

Dwayne

I think it has to do with the close proximity of the camera to the elk and lens size. No one hunting really wants to lug a dedicated camera with a much wider lens around and most pics are probably taken just fitting the animal or its rack in the picture frame. If the pic had been taken from further back, the effect would probably be lessened.

I think it has more to do with the missing G3 on his right, which makes that beam look crazy long, especially when closer to the camera. Very cool elk, congrats!

Congrats to all the successful hunters. Not sure how some of you do it in that heat though. When it's in the 60's here for the beginning of bow season that is too hot for me.

Alaska moose I got last week on opening day (Sept 15). Limited quota area (draw) with about 1% odds of drawing. I've drawn it twice in the past 3 years. .264 Win Mag with 140 Partitions scooting along about 3,050 fps. Could have taken my Whelen but I used that on my last moose. 80 yd shot from about 35 feet up in a spruce tree. My buddy called him right in early in the morning. Shot at 6:30 - all meat packed back to camp (5 trip for each of us, 400 yds to the river) by 5:30 pm. 110# hind quarters. Probably a 3.5 or 4.5 y.o. moose. Only one horn as he busted the other off fighting - would have loved to seen the moose that kicked his butt.

Combo of sloshing in a puddle, raking on some alders and bull grunts. This one responded within about 5 minutes. Prolly walked 1/2 mile straight to us, grunting the entire way. Pretty fun, but my buddy got kind of nervous when the thing got real close. I picked up him about 150 yards away.

Funny thing was we both climbed the same tree the nite prior to the opener. The commotion of that and breaking some limbs for sight and shooting lanes brought a young bull (30" ?) right into us. He stayed there about 1/2 hr trying to figure out what was going on.

J - not a drop of rain the entire trip.

Also, they added two subsistence tags to this year's quota for Berners Bay. Heard two guys from Thorne Bay scored them. No idea whether they were successful - any word on your end?

I didn’t hear anything. Might need to put in next year.

AK folk, how does ADGF decide if a moose is legal in a 50-inch minimum (for example) area, when one side is busted off? Double the existing side? Just curious, cuz I'd want to shoot him ...

ANY bull tag. He was 50" +

Brought the antlers and lower jaw section (required) to ADF&G. On the hunt report card, they have a place for how wide. I told the tech he could estimate it pretty easy. He wasn't interested. The only data they collected was that it had one right-side brow tine. They will age it from the teeth - which is probably the most important data to them.

I think they still have to be 50". So, pretty tough to do on a one-horner. If it were "double the big side", you'd see a lot more one-sided moose, after the fact...

We saw two different bulls with horn issues this year. One was a 3 point (barely), and thus not a legal spike/fork. Other was about this size of MM's, but he got shot as his little side formed a spike. Didn't get shot by us, and don't know what F&G would do with it.

Maybe they want one-horned bulls to walk. Unless of course, the one horn meets minimum smile Now that'd be cool!

Unit 13 which is part of unit 11. 3 points should get you a tag. My load was a 350 gr Federal BOR Lock over 110 gr of BH 209. I put an EABCO sight on mine. If you do that you may want to put a lower front sight on. I ran out of vertical adjustment on the peep trying to raise point of impact.

I had read quite a few good reports on terminal performance of this bullet but they seem a little soft to me. I hit the bull a little lower and further back than I wanted. Caught the back of one lung and destroyed the liver but the bullet didn't exit. It was flattened out under the hide on the offside. I'm not sure if it even hit a rib. I definitely wouldn't try to shoot through the shoulder with it.

Thanks Jerry! I'm 63 and hopefully have a few more elk hunts left in me grin. I was hunting with an outfitter and we loaded the bull into the back of a Ranger and drove him back to camp. I don't have many friends who can afford to hunt out west at this point and I'm not real anxious to try and get an elk out on my own at my age.

Here's a pic of the EABCO Aperture sight. As you can see the peep is at the top of the adjustment range. I thought I'd drop a set of rings on the base and mount my scope but with the peep that high it would hit the tube on my scope with medium rings. I'm just going to reinstall my old base to keep the scope nice and low.

Yep - I've got the exact same setup and, like you, found I needed a different front sight and that my scope would hit the aperture. Not exactly how EABCO markets it.

Colorado has the best MZ seasons of all the states that I apply for. NV has a few rut hunts, but they are awfully hard to draw.

I'll probably roll with a Thor bullet when I go elk hunting in CO.

I'm 70 and yes, I could make the hunt. However there's no way I could PACK out an Elk that size or Moose.

At 63, I could have. I have 3 health issues that limit my packing abilities. Torn knee being the most painful.

IF you pay for my 'outfitter with a truck', I'd go IF I had to borrow the $$$. grin

Congrats Again.

Muskeg,

I'd say it depends on what bullet you're shooting. EABCO does offer a lower front sight for $20 that I'm going to buy in case I use the peep again. I was also going to go with Thor bullets. I went through the whole thing with the sizing pack ended up shooting 300 gr Ballistic Tip .501's. Even though they seem to be the right size they're still tough to load. I picked up the Federal BOR Lock's at Cabela's while getting more powder. They were much more consistent than the Thor's so I decided to use them.

Jerry, I had a torn meniscus in my left knee but an arthroscopy fixed it up before I retired. My son is going with me somewhere next year. We'll figure that out this fall/winter. Thanks!

I use the same EABCO rear aperture on my CVA Accura V2. I really like it. I also had to install a Williams fire sight front sight as it is quite a bit lower than the CVA factory sight. I killed my Co. cow at 142 yards with my home cast and powder coated Lee REAL 320 gr. bullets. They shoot awesome out of my rifle when combined with Blackhorn 209 powder.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

I had 2 tags and was able to take her calf at 184 yards.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

My good buddy was also able to hang his tag on a real nice 6 point. He shoots an Accura with a SeeAll open sight and 300 gr. Thor's.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

It was a very Hot, dry, dusty and tough hunt but we were able to fill out. Public land DYI hunt. 2 of the tags came off the leftover list.

Good to see some tags getting filled.

Todd

Great shooting Todd! How was the penetration with your home cast bullets and the Thor?

We didn’t capture a single bullet. 3 shots, 3 dead elk. My buddy killed his bull at 25 yards with the Thor. Complete pass through with awesome terminal performance.

My antelope buck for 2020. Nothing big, but it was a fun stalk. 1 shot with my old M1 and down he went. 237 yards, which is not hard to do with a good M1, but I had hoped to get real close like I have the last few years. He saw me, stood up from his bed in the sage and faced me trying to see what I was. So I was not getting any closer. I had to either let him go (almost did) or take the shot, but I have not been paid in a while and money is a bit tight so I though I better end the season so I didn't have to buy gas to drive over there again. I didn't get a tag for any area close to my home and had to drive about 110 miles to get to the area I drew. Maybe I should have let him go because the paycheck came today, but I didn't know it at the time (3 days ago ---- on Tuesday)

My wife and I just finished eating his heart for dinner, which I missed. I tried to heart shoot him, but the bullet entered about 3" to the left of center and missed the heart. Didn't matter, and he fell instantly as the bullet went clear through him lengthwise.

Thanks for the congrats. My son joined me for the first time in 7 years (he discovered girls and later, beer in the interim) so it was particularly enjoyable for me.

Haha, right...;)

It got dark while I was gutting him, and I glanced up the hill, and saw my lighted nock glowing in the dark, about 50 yards from where he fell, telling me I had to slow down and find the broken shaft inside the cavity before it drew blood on me. And I did...;)

Luck....is the residue of design...

Tough year here in So. Idaho. More out of state hunters than elk. Finally connected on this little 5x5 Sunday afternoon of the last weekend. Not exactly what most people would consider typical elk country, but this little guy was laying in the shade of a big rock along with 7 cows and calves. That is the 'out hole' in the pic. At the shot he was quartering away. Arrow caught him behind the last rib and came out mid opposite shoulder as seen in pic. Bull went about 25 yards and dropped dead. 52 yard shot with my old Hoyt Charger 60# bow and Whackem 100gr 3 blade broadheads on Easton Bloodline arrows. ~ 380gr @ 275 fps. Felt more like mule deer hunting and stalking than elk, but they are where you find them.

Cast and blast weekend. Only had one antelope doe license this year so we dragged the boat out too and had a ball after 30 minutes of hunting.

A friend shot this wide blacktail along the Sacramento river farmland a few days ago. I'm told the buck was standing there looking at him from about 130 yards out. Girlfriend said she couldn't make that shot so he aimed at it's nose. Custom made 270, dunno the rest of the details.

I know about "lost puppies". I have TWO and I'm Locked & Loaded for them. I have given EACH one his own puppy name.

It gets tiring when they stick their noses where they DON'T belong and they DON'T know what they're talking about!!!!

Just waiting puppy dogs.

My name is JWALL and I said THAT. Ask S head, I do what I promise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks JG, the problem is the big ones don't come around often enuff.

For EVERYONE..... those bucks were not killed in 2020. I posted them 'gouging' Fotis.
I've posted them before but I used them in FUN today.

The first one was 2007....a very fond memory. I jumped him in a cutover bedded with a doe. Shot him on the run and
he flipped and landed ON HIS BACK, belly and feet UP. I didn't think to take a pic at the time, WISH I had. That was 3 yrs before I joined here.

The second was 2008.... FIRST deer I shot AT with my Black Shadow 300 WM.

This Season doesn't start till Saturday, Muzzleloader only.

THIS year I'm looking for one or BOTH of these bucks.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

^^^^^^
This guy was in Doe Only season last Oct modern gun. I bleated and he stopped mid step. I had a 7 Mag in hand but only took his pic. He's still in the area and has been seen.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

^^^^^
This guy was at my place Oct. 6 -- 2020 -- This year

I'd be happy to kill either one and ecstatic to get both.

Thank You and he was. 194# on scale as seen.

I was a member of a big club. I did NOT want anyone to know where I killed him. I dragged him to side of the road and
BACKED my 4x4 into the ditch...tailgate down SO I could pull him into it.
GOT THE HECK GONE quick. grin

I've taken a lot of guys & kids hunting -- that I know. I'd be glad to take you IF we had a chance to get acquainted.

Beside, it's a LONG way from Alaska to Arkansas. Surely someone close to you could. Good Luck
