Right now the hard part might be finding the ebony. Had to order some for a project and I got the last two pieces the supplier had - and it was not quality stuff.

I couldn’t find any ebony for a project once that needed a forend tip. Bought two pieces of 3/8” flat ebony on EBay for making knife scales, they were 2x6x3/8. I cut them into 2x3 pieces and laminated them together using WEST systems epoxy. It’s been 6-7 years now and I’d bet $100 you couldn’t find a seam in that forend cap.
Just an idea for you guys who’re having trouble sourcing ebony.

I'm lucky in that there's an exotic hardwood emporium three miles from my house which carries an insane amount of ebony in all flavors and sizes. Even at that I usually have to pick for a 1/2 hour to find a chunk that is truly black and crack-free.
Excellent advice re: epoxy to fill cracks or hide seams. I too use West System but I take it a step further. I mix the stuff and thicken it to a heavy viscosity with colloidal silica, and then blacken it with ebony sanding dust.
When gluing ebony always thoroughly wash the surfaces with solvent (I use acetone) to remove the surface oils which can interfere with ultimate bonding.

The big consideration is matching finishes. Ebony can be oily and some finishes won't stick or cure when applied to it. In my way of thinking, what you're asking would be the same as trying to add a muzzle brake to a blued barrel and blend it in without marring the barrel's finish. I do stock work and I wouldn't attempt it.

Thanks to all for responding. I’ll not be attempting this myself. Was thinking of having a member of the ACGG here in NE Oklahoma such as Dave McClain, Mike Kuffler or Nick Hughes do the work.
