Just got back from Florida and did a bunch of different fishing. Had a blast. One day of fishing involved flats fishing which fits my style of fishing. I caught a couple of bone fish the guide said was about 6-7 lbs.

My buddy also caught one by accident while going for different fish, smaller than mine. The guide seemed really excited and said we did really well. I know bone fish are considered trophies and they were a fun fight. But is it really a big deal? Since it's my first time fishing flats I don't know what I should have expected or anything to compare to. I did have fun and want to do it again.

A 6 or 7 Lb. bone fish is good. I have caught hundreds and few would make that weight. The keys have some of the largest Bonefish as well as the Bahamas.

Yes. Six to 7 is a trophy and it's a miracle to land those making it up into the 10 to 12 lb range. Great fishing in my book as it's sort of a combination of hunting and fishing. I.e. spot and stalk. Those screaming runs, by even a lowly 2 pounder, are something else. Were I to come into a bit more wealth, there'd be an annual trip on my calendar every year.

Not scored a Permit or Tarpon yet, but maybe next trip.

It was a blast to catch. Buddy and I are already talking about a spring trip for Permit and Snook.

I guess the guide said it best, A large average size or a small trophy. Guess I shouldn't expect to do better on such limited time.

I lived on Duck key for 10 years and guided mostly reef trips for the Hawks Cay resort. My friends who were flats guides there would go to places like Belize for serious Bone fishing. You have got to catch them before you know how,
and no education comes without cost.

Ive made 3 trips to Abaco, 1/2 doz to the keys and Belize fly fishing for bone fish.

Its pretty tough to sight cast to them with a fly rod. Fairly easy throwing live shrimp or crab to them with spinning gear. They are a blast to stalk and catch on the flats. I was mostly using an 8 wt.

Anything over 7 lbs is pretty respectable. An 8 lber on fly is a definite trophy.
