Headed to Thunder Ranch in two months for their “Urban Precision Rifle” course, and looking for recommendations on AR mag holders.

Thinking kydex weak (left) side?

Any recommendations?

add Viking Tactics skirmish belt?

or battle belt?

The least used gear that I thought I needed is a battle belt. I went to just using a regular belt and 10 speed pouches for my mags.

The issue is holster options for MOLLE and the belt riding up going into prone or other odd positions. Whatever you get I do recommend a dump pouch.

I did buy this one and it works better but I'm just not crazy about battle belts I guess. https://www.gadsdendynamics.com/products/enhanced-war-belt

Without looking, thinking Smith might have a suggested gear list. No?

Three gun shooters might have a suggestion, but will that coenside with the course? Or.... Smiths ideas??

You might have a better wish list after the course.

For versatility the following works for me: Any instructors type belt w/ a Safariland ALS holster, a kydex AR mag holster and a double pistol mag kydex pouch and a dump pouch

An HPG Recon chest pag w/ a Blue Force gear 10 speed AR 15 double mag holder and a double pistol mag holder.

Clint's courses are not really run and gun so many combos will work. My suggestions will also work for hunting as well as range work. I carry wind dust, lip balm, a GPS, a pistol mag and a Spyderco Native in the 10 speed pouches and a G43 and survival gear in the HPG recon when hunting.

The dump pouch is pretty handy.

Mike,

Thanks. I can’t find a gear list on the website, so I asked here and emailed Brian at Thunder Ranch.

For mag pouches I like these.... https://www.skdtac.com/ITW-FASTMAG-p/itw.110.htm and the mid or tall Esstac pouches https://www.skdtac.com/Esstac-5-56-Single-KYWI-Pouch-Midlength-p/ess.545.htm but I'm not sure how the Esstac would do on a belt.

For a belt I'd echo what TWR said about battle belts. I prefer a very stiff nylon belt for everything now. I've had a Volund for a while and love it. No complaints at all.

Dump pouches are a good idea for any class. I keep a notebook and pen and take notes all day to refer back to later. A steno notebook will curve around and allow nearly full use of the pouch. I'd also I'd recommend a size smaller than you think you'll want. A giant bag flopping around behind you isn't fun and the bigger it is the more random stuff you'll cram in it that you don't need. Mine is barely big enough for a Nalgene and I'd prefer something just a hair larger, but not much. I can fit a 16oz water bottle, sharpie, notes, and a mag in it--or no water and several mags.

Everything Mike said. A HPG chest rig is an interesting idea and a good excuse to pick up a piece of gear that you'd use at other times too.

I’ve also got a HPG recon kit bag with the recon harness that holds a water bladder. Put a 10 speed triple mag pouch on the front of the bag and it holds both shooting gear and running gear for my longer training runs.
