Grab a cold drink and sit back as this will be a long post. I want to include as much info as possible up front.

As the current news from the Bots Govt doesn't seem be even hinting at opening the boarders this month, it looks like hunting in Bots for 2020 is going to be pretty much a bust. Technically, the "official" hunting season runs from 1 Apr to 30 Sep but, planes game hunting on private land can be "open" year a round. Even though Gerhard's place, Sass Post, is private land, he follows the "official" season dates.

On a positive side, Gerhard and his friend Jaco did win two separate concessions for elephant (15 near the Okavango Delta and a few cape buffalo and two leopard this (2020) year and 3 additional elephant in a concession at the north end of the Tuli Block. The govt did allow their concession rights and quotas to be rolled over into 2021. As those are govt concessions, those hunts can't be until Apr 2021.

I've already set aside three plains game hunt dates centered over the dark of the moon for Jun, Jul and Aug 2021 with Gerhard for his place, Sass Post, at the south end of the Tuil Block, for some small group hunts again. All three dates will be for 10 FULL hunting days with travel to and back on each end.

As I offered for this year (2020), the small groups are limited to 4-5 total hunters/observers. Closed camp, meaning our group are the ONLY ones on the entire property (250k acres) for the duration of the hunt.

2-17 Jun 2021 - we'll depart the US on 2 Jun. We'll arrive at Sass Post on 4 Jun and hunt 10 FULL days from 5-14 Jun. Travel back will be the 15th and home on the 17th. I already have two people on this so room for 2-3 more. I'll be one of the hunters on this one.

3-18 Jul 2021 - depart the US on 3 Jul. Arrive Sass Post on 5 Jul and hunt 10 FULL days from 6-15 Jul. Travel home will start on the 16th and home the 18th. All four-five spots for this one are currently open. I would prefer not to travel with this group unless there are first time African hunters /observers that can't make the other trip dates.

31-Jul to 15 Aug 2021 - we'll depart on 31 Jul. Arrive at Sass Post on 2 Aug and hunt 10 FULL days from 3-12 Aug. Travel home will start on 13 Aug and home on the 15th. All four spots are currently spoken for. I'll be on this hunt for sure and the other three spots are the same ones who were on this Aug's CNX'd hunt. Would consider taking a 5th if needed.

Several important things:

1. NO MONEY IS REQUIRED at this point. Only thing required, for now, is a public commitment to one of the spots or as an "alternate" for a spot. If there is an alternate (5th) for a group, you will go. I've already reserved the dates to hold them as the full dark moon is the prime time for PG hunting.

2. Once the boarders get open and the airline routes get sorted out then we can start actually locking in commitments. I'm thinking that things will be back and mostly on track early in 2021. By "locking in commitments", I mean you'll have to put down a deposit directly with Gerhard. The deposit is the customary 50% minimum of the daily rates and projected trophy fees or 50% of the "package" price if you opt for one of those. At this point I think it would be reasonable to anticipate that being no later than 120-days from the date we are scheduled to arrive with the balance paid in cash or by credit card before we leave Sass Post. This 120-day window will also be after the normal DSC/SCI expos. At this point, Gerhard and Jaco are still planning to attend the Houston Safari Club Expo 26-28 Feb 2021.

3. You are also always welcome to book a hunt directly with Gerhard if you can't make one of the three small group trips. Either way, I'll still help you coordinate your travel and any overnight lodging you might need along the way as well as your rifle import permits into Bots and any other questions you may have.

4. As I’ve mentioned before – I don’t get a “cut” or a “commission”. I pay my own way. I do this just because I honestly love going and also helping others who may have always wanted to go but don’t have anyone else interested or thought it was too difficult to do on their own. So, here are the four “usual” packages Gerhard has. You can also contact him directly and inquire about other options you’d like. His email address is: gmkochbotyahoo.com and if you have the smart phone app called Whatsapp you can text him at: +267 75 414 214.

5. Below is his price list - same prices as offered this year (2020). The listed package hunts are just the most popular ones he offers. You have a choice of one of these or a straight daily rate and individual trophy/cull fee per head or you can contact him directly and tell him what you want for a "package" in the terms of number of days, species, number of heads of each and trophy or culls and have him give a your customized hunt. As long as you can do the same date windows I've got above, you're more than welcome to join one of the trips.

Note: All of the below "packages" are for less than the 10 full hunting days I've booked so, you'll have to add a couple of extra daily rate fees to the package you choose to make the full 10-day trip. Again, these are just examples and can be modified to fit your desires. For example, on the Aug trip, I'm doing pkg #4 and exchanging trophies for more culls of each species and the wart hogs for other culls and doing it with just one other shooter.

Still nothing new about Bots opening to International tourist yet. There was "supposed to be" some sort of an announcement on 28 Sept but....crickets. Internally, citizens are pretty much free to move about and supply trucks are able to move across the boarders.

I do have two more guys who've said they were interested in spots for next year. As I told them both, no formal "commitment" is required yet since the country is still closed and not knowing what airlines are going to be providing services in/out.

Two of the elephant in NG-49 are formally "committed" to as soon as the season opens 1 Apr provided boarders/airlines are at least back to semi-normal.

As long as COVID infection rates "supposedly remain high, US hunters aren't going anywhere IMO.

Well JG, all I can say is US hunters are going to and getting into Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe now for a few weeks. Are there a few extra hurdles to the trip, yes but they are going. If you mean many may be "choosing" not to go, could be.

See on a number of other forums, there are a lot of guys booking for next year due to some good discounted hunts and from what I understand, most are being offered some sort of "Covid" based out, be it the hunt rolling to a later date etc. There are at least two I am aware of that put serious commitments on those two sold elephants for next Apr. They were the same two that were "sold" just a few hours after Jaco and Gerhard won the tenders. Money was put down and boarders closed before the hunters could get there. Fortunately the govt rolled all the quotas over to 2021 and Gerhard and Jaco did the same with hunters.

As I mentioned in my original post, in the case of these small group hunts, I've already put enough money down to cover/lock in the trips and dates for 2021. I've also been pretty clear that no one need to make a financial commitment to any of these until boarders are open and air carrier options get sorted out. Some guys who are interested have to start making plans to set vacation dates for 2021 with their employers.

Edited to add: As of today, there are two "committed" hunters for the June trip and four committed to the Aug trip. Same folks who were committed to the Jun and Aug trips from this year. Add in the two guys seriously considering going - just not sure which trip and again, pending on boarder openings/flight resumptions.

On a side note, RSA opened its boarders effective 1 Oct and also dropped the Visa requirement for US based travelers. The Visa wasn't that big of a deal in the first place. Was free and just stamped in your passport when you entered. It will cut out the time just standing in the queue for the stamp. The same airlines are slowly ramping up ops meaning they will likely only be offering flts in/out just several days a week initially.

Virtually every country around Bots is open/opening, so unless things REALLY go in the toilet, I'm willing to bet Bots will be open and flts in/out in a few weeks.

Looks like the rainy season has started in the Tuli already. Very heavy rain. Got message and pics from Gerhard that all the pans on the property filled with water in about 2hrs and the Limpopo is in full flow. Should be really good grass this year and with the only pressure from his light meat culling the game should be very abundant and in excellent condition next year.

Now, just have to get the boarders open and airlines sorted out. There is time as the season doesn't open until April.

Morning Labman.

My wife and I did pkg #3 on the Aug 2019 trip. We had already done 10-days in Namibia and I wanted to show her Gerhard's place. I let her do most of the shooting. She had a blast.....literally and figuratively! laugh What he's got set up in #3 with the numbers of animals is just about right for a 2x1 six day trip. Could also be a good foundation to add a couple of days to make the full 10-days I've reserved and a couple of select trophy species too. The absolute best deal I think I've ever seen offered on the web or at a convention is pkg #4 with a couple of extra days added to make the full ten days reserved.

The primary reason I've added a couple of days to all of his "standard" packages the difference in how they conduct trophy hunts vs culls. They do the "normal" morning and afternoon hunts for both. But, when taking culls, the animal is just given an quick field gutting and moved under thorn bushes and the location is marked on GPS and the hunt continues. At the end of the morning or at sundown, the culled animals are collected and returned to he butchery. With the cool temps and abdominal organs removed the meat is just fine. When a "trophy" animal is taken and the hunter wants flat skins/rugs or shoulder/full body mounts vs just European (skull/horns on shield) where there is less concern about hair slippage, the hunting stops and the trophy is immediately recovered and taken to the butchery for care/processing. Considering the size of the property and the distances/travel time from the bush to the butchery, you may well not have time to go back out hunting again that morning/afternoon.

The other reason I added a couple of extra days is, these packages, especially #4, is a LOT of hunting/shooting. If you don't take all the animals in the package, you don't get a refund. You can exchange trophies for culls and culls for trophies though.

Going to be out of pocket for a couple of days so if any questions come up, it may take me a bit to respond.

Morning Gunner. Come on! Still two spots open for the Jun trip and if that's not good for you, would take you as a 5th in Aug. With the rains they've had already there this year and the nearly zero hunting pressure, the animals should be fat, happy and plentiful!

We just need the boarders to open and flights in/out sorted out. Pretty sure Qatar Air will be hard to beat both in price and if they resume their previous semi-direct routes into Gaborone.

And just a side note - we may have to slide the dates a day or two either way due to whatever the airlines sort out. Last year, 2020 before things shut down, Qatar Air was flying the semi-direct flights between Doha and Gabby three days a week. The other days, they were partnered with Air Botswana and SAA Airlink and SAA Express with just a couple hour layover each way in J'berg. So, just remains to be seen who's operating early next year.

Sorry for not posting in a bit. Been extra busy lately. So.....

Good news is that Botswana is open again for international travel, tourism and hunters. Current airlines offering flights in/out are Air Botswana from Johannesburg to Gaborone and Maun, Ethiopian Airlines into Maun and Gabby and Qatar Air via J'berg and partnered with Air Bots. All are on very limited schedules of just a couple of flights a week while waiting for demand to build.

Similar Covid 19 requirements such as having a clean Covid test cert within 72 hrs of arrival in country etc. Things in general are still sorting themselves out kind of like waking up from a long hard sleep. I feel pretty confident that by the time the formal hunting season opens on 1 Apr, things will be mostly sorted out and running more or less smoothly as can be expected.

A little more good news. Gerhard finally has his website back up and online.

Kochsafaris.com

Was pretty much a complete "do over" and all fresh and new.

He also links to I guess it's his Youtube channel from the his website where he plans on updating videos. He's just got two video clips up there now and hope a few more will subscribe and give him a bit of boost.

As always, if anyone has any questions on Bots, Gerhard and Maggie's ops and either of the two small group trips, always feel free to contact me or Gerhard.

Love to have you along Gunner. Still a couple of spots open for Jun and can add a 5th to the Aug go.

Understand, the WuFlu caused "unknowns" regarding travel and such have a lot of people a bit anxious/nervous about committing to any trips at all to anywhere outside the US. Completely understandable!

Gerhard fully understands this as well as do I. That's why I've put enough money upfront with him to secure these prime, dark of the moon dates and someone who just makes a "commitment" now, doesn't have to put any money out of pocket at this time. Once we get to within the 90-100 day window for departure and/or airline tickets purchased, then you'd have to send your "deposit" to him to lock in your trip.

So, what happens if everything goes to hell with international travel, boarders again between now and time to send your deposit - nothing. What happens if things go to hell between the time you wire your deposit and the day we arrive - just like happened with the two groups I had planned for 2020. Deposits just rolled to this year and used them to lock in for 2021.

Know a number of folks will be attending the "Big Shows" in Jan-Mar, if they don't cancel. I had word from Gerhard yesterday they won't be attending the Houston DSC show this Feb as originally planned. With being completely shut down for the entire 2020 hunting season and having to front BIG MONEY to purchase the DG concessions a month before the world closed travel, it's just not to feasible to make the trip. Too, they do have a lot of bookings that have been rolled from 2020 to 2021 so not a lot of need make the trip.

So, with all that said.......we're about 6-months away from the 1st trip.

Morning Bill - I do. He just finished redoing his entire website and got it back on-line a few weeks ago.

http://kochsafaris.com/

Koch Safaris

Have been messaging with Gerhard over the holidays and things are still on. Country is "open" to international tourists/hunters and flights are starting to come back too, though still a bit limited. Capacity (flights) will be added as demand grows.

As I've stated above, no money required now, as I've got money on deposit to secure/lock in the dates. We MAY have to slide a the dates a day or two earlier/later to be able to sort out the flights. We should be able to lock in tickets 90-100 days before departure. Once that commitment is made, that is when those going would need to send him the deposit to lock in your spot.

Still spots available for both trips and if anyone can't make those dates, your free to contact Gerhard directly and see what he has open outside those dates. I'll still help you sort out paperwork/documents and with flights, but just won't be able to travel with you or your group.

As always, feel free to contact me or Gerhard directly with questions. The above "packages" are just the most frequent ones he does, but he is willing to customize them by exchanging culls for trophies or trophies for culls etc. Will even put together a totally customized hunt for you to your desires.

Can always PM me to request my phone number we can chat about any questions you may have or I can provide Gerhard's mobile number and you can call or message him via Whatsapp directly.

Michael

Edited to Add: PM me your email address and I can send you a short video of our Jun 2019 trip.

By the way, there are at least two members of this forum who've hunted with Gerhard on Sass Post and both of them are going back on the Jun and Aug trips.

They are: Autofire and GDSTX. Pretty sure if you ask them, they'll be glad to fill you in on Bots, Gerhard and his ops in/around Sass Post.

I've been messaging with Gerhard this morning and want to give some updates on the June trip.

1. This kind of needs to be the "final call" over the next week or so for anyone who might still want to make the June trip. The good news is that PG and DG bookings are happening pretty rapidly all over the country. Unlike a lot of other countries, there are not a lot of "free lance" PH's so, Gerhard needs to start locking in ones who are familiar with the property fairly soon.

2. COVID situation - As of RIGHT NOW, the country is open. They do have a night time travel curfew and no alcohol sales. Can still bring in your own. They do require a negative Covid test when you arrive, and they also do a "rapid test" when you arrive. You'll also have to have a negative test before you get on the flights going over and coming home. Again, the rapid test IS available inside the airport terminal in Gaborone. From what I understand, the tests are also available inside all US International terminals if you don't or can't get within 48hrs of departure. A current or proof of a COVID vaccination is NOT required to enter Botswana or on the international airlines to get there.

3. Airlines and routes. As of NOW, there are very limited routes/ways/airlines available to get there. In the last few days, Delta had even CNX'd it's daily to Jberg. That leaves Qatar Air from several US airports, to Doha Qatar and then to Jberg and in on the same plane or a change of plane to Air Botswana or SA Airlink.

Next options are Emirates or Ethiopian Air. They do offer direct and semi direct flts into Gaborone but only once a week. They do offer daily service into Jberg and then tranfer to Air Bots or SA Airlink.

As of now, you will have to wear a face mask while on the flight unless eating or drinking.

4. Transiting Jberg - as of NOW, US travelers can trans thru Jberg and back to the US. You can even stay over-night in Jberg to make connections as long as you have a recent negative COVID test. US citizens can re-enter the US from RSA again, provided you have a current negative COVID test. Rapid COVID testing is available inside the terminal in Jberg. From what I was told by a travel agent two days ago, even IF you've had a COVID vaccination, you still have to have a negative test and fly with a mask.

I've been researching the flight possibilities for the last few days. From what I have found, it would appear that Qatar Air, is offering the most US airport options and the best prices. They all will route via an overnight flt from the US to the Qatari capital city of Doha and then connecting onward to Jberg and then either on the same plane into Botswana or a change of carrier into Gaborone. The layover in Doha will vary, depending on what US city you depart/return.

I spent a good bit of time in Qatar and Doha when I was on active duty. Doha is where HQ USCENTOM has it's forward HQ based out of. The country is safe, the city is beautiful and the terminal is spectacular. Depending on the length of layover and the class of ticket, you can opt for a hotel room inside the terminal or a few minutes away from the terminal or just a few hours in one of the lounges with food, drinks and showers included.

I'm still planning to go to Bots this Apr and tag along with Gerhard and Jaco for their elephant hunts. I haven't booked the tickets yet as there are a few moving parts to sort out. Once those are locked, I'll book my tickets and they will be on Qatar Air out of Houston.

Still a spot available for the June and Aug trips.

This hunting trip sounds awesome, but I cannot afford it. I wish I could, I smell big fun.

Vortex - no worries and looks like you're interested enough to join the site!! grin

I plan on doing at LEAST one of these small group trips to Bots every year and maybe a small group of one or two more hunters to my friend's place in NW Namibia. Might do more if there is enough interest. And of course, anyone can go anytime they can sort out dates with Gerhard in the Tuli block or with Jaco at his place near Ghanzi. I'll still help with the planning and paperwork and airline routes and airlines but, may not be able to travel with.

As I've mentioned, I've run across a LOT of guys who've always dreamed of an African safari but didn't have anyone to go with them and going the first time alone can be a pretty daunting undertaking. By putting together a small group like this, it opens up possibilities for the "first timer" to get their "first one" under their belts.

I met a retired gentleman at a gunshow several years ago who'd always dreamed of going but, as above, had nobody to go with. I told him, "you do now". He asked if I was serious and I told him absolutely. All you need to do is tell me when you want to go, have a passport and at least a 308 Win or better rifle and, as they say in Africa, "we'll make a plan". He set dates, had the rifle and passport and 4 months later he was hunting in NW Namibia and had a terrific time.

You don’t even need the rifle. I have used camp rifles for the last 10 safaris...A lot less hassle.

I'm with ya Kevin!!!

There is still one spot open if someone wants to join. Getting a little tight but, as long as you have a current passport in hand with at least 6-months of validity from the day we leave and at least 6-blank pages in the back, you can make it.

PM me you email address and I'll send you a little video they did of our Jun 2019 trip so you can see what the place looks like.

Quick update:

Three of us have tickets bought for this June's trip and one more confirmed going and just sorting out what route he wants to take. Could still take one more but, time is tight.

Two of us have tickets bought for this August's trip, a third committed to going and could still take one or two more.

Still one spot open for the this June but inside the 60-day window so "time is of the essence" if someone wants to still try and go. IF you don't want to travel on your own, my travel agent could probably still get you a ticket to meet up with me in Boston and over to Bots on Qatar Air or you could meet up on the gentleman from Houston who's been to Africa a number of times and to Gerhards several too and go with him, again via Qatar Air.

he Aug trip is now full.

Anyone who'd like to go on their own is more that welcome to contact Gerhard directly and sort out dates and details. I'll still help you with the travel planning/routing and airlines info as well as the rifle import documents etc. He still has some openings in July. If you want to try and sort something out with him for then, the dark moon dates for July are 6-15.

I'll be putting together at least one or maybe two more similar trips like this for next year and anticipate the same months, dark of the moon of June and/or Aug depending on interest and which month fits best in their schedule.

I'd also like to put together a similar trip to my friend's place in Namibia in 2022. He only has one bungalow with two private guest rooms with ensuite private bathrooms, so would be limited to just two hunters or up to four if willing to share a room with separate full size beds.

Wanted to pass a quick up-date to some hunting at Koch Safaris so far.

1. A friend of mine, Perry B., was going to be in Malawi for some conferences and had a week break between sessions. He wanted to know if I could sort something out with Gerhard on a short notice (3 weeks) PG cull trip for him. Sure. Got the dates locked and Gerhard put together a 5-day, 1x1 cull package of 5 impala and 5 blue w/b. Included road transfer to/from the airport, rental rifle and ammo normal food and drinks and a half day trip to Mahalapye and back to for the Rona test to fly back to Malawi. I "think" it was all in for under $3500. I sent the following WhatsApp message to him,

"Glad you're having a good time! Was I exaggerating? 🤪 You'll have to give me a detailed SITREP while you're in Malawi since we leave for Saas Post on 2 Jun."

His reply: "No, you were not exaggerating! Very nice setup. Had COVID test this morning. Now headed out for an afternoon session. I want to come back with you next year for a full hunt, so save a spot for me!"

He's busy with the conference stuff now but, I will post up what he sends me when he gets back home, including some pics.

2. Gerhard has an elephant client in CT27. That is the concession they have on the far N. end of the his place in the Tuli. I think I posted above about the hunts there and the "expectation" was for 25-45 lb ivory. Well.. the photo he sent me this morning of the ele they took yesterday was in the 70 lb class. Still green/wet so have to wait until the nerve dries out to see what it ends up being. I asked if I could post the photo if I cropped out the client's face and he asked me to wait as he has a second client with him and he doesn't want to jinx his luck. It really is a damn fine animal for anywhere in Africa. I will post when I have permission.

OK gents. The "hunt" is over and I've got permission to show the pics. They ended up with just the one elephant. They were in them nearly everyday and saw good respectable 35-45 pounders that were advertised. But after getting that 70+ one below, they held off, hoping to find another big one that had been seen while scouting a few months ago. So, struck out on the 2nd but, scored TWO really, really nice leopards.

Ribka - PM sent.

Since you're the first to express interest in Namibia for 2022, Guess you get to pick the month.

A little "weekend update":

June trip - we leave this Wed. Slight change in plans, will just be 3 of us going, the 4th has business hang-ups due to govt Covid related "stuff", but he is bumping to the Aug trip. Our kit is all sorted and ready for final packing. One more short practice session at the local range Sunday morning. Rifles were seriously cleaned after the last trip a couple of days ago. This trip is to just confirm final sight-in and foul the barrels. When done, they will only have a bore snake passed thru a time or two.

All the firearm paperwork is done. Airlines double checked/confirmed we have "traveling with firearms" logged in our reservations. Transit permits thru Doha (we're all flying Qatar Air in) are confirmed. Copies of RSA SAPS 520 firearm transit permits are done and ready, just incase something unforeseen happens and we have to claim and re-check rifles in Jberg either way.

I've organized a local private lab that does the RT-PCR test that is required to fly (note: vaccinations or antibody tests mean NOTHING) is scheduled for 8 am Tues morning and they guarantee results by the end of the same day. So, as of now, it looks like the trip is still "ON".

One other slight change of plan - since the 3rd guy going has been to Africa and Saas Post several times and doesn't need my help coming back, my wife and I are just cull hunting for 6-days then Gerhard has organized a 4x4 camper for us and we're going to "self drive" around Bots for 10-days and start exploring it like we've done in Namibia.

I'm not taking a computer, just smart phone. Will try to make an update or two while there and will do a better report when we get home the end of Jun.

Thanks ND.

I don't know all the details yet of our road trip. Gerhard is going to "surprise" us. All I do know is we're gong to spend two nights and one full day with Jaco at his place near Ghanzi. Going to do a 1/2 day of fishing for tiger fish in the Okavango someplace and he's got us booked for a short "sightseeing" flight over the Delta at some point. I'm sure we're going to have some time in the Chobe NP as I've specifically asked to see that for at least a full day. He asked if we wanted to go up to Vic Falls and we declined as we'd been there a couple of times before. The rest is going to be............FUN.
