I would guess this is a gang member making his bones.
Gang activity is something that just is never talked about in the MSM. Bloods and Crips are only two of dozens of Balck organized crime entities that infest our cities. Bloods and Crips have spread out to most all major cities, but they have local competition which is fierce and violent.
I've read reports where in the 1990's most of the gang related killings were either sanctioned by the rulers and/or retribution killings. Reports are these days the young punks kill just to get street cred and have no remorse. No reason to shoot someone other than jut something to do.

Killing, Maiming and other violent crimes are the most common requirement to get into any of the gangs. That alone is enough reason to have an open season.

Why would one of the deputies have to die to make this a death penalty case?
Heinous, assault with a deadly weapon upon two peace officers should be enough.
It’s California, doubt the perp would do more than 5-7 years anyway.

To me it looked like the shooter was either a young kid or a midget by the way he ran when he took off. The first thoughts of both my wife and I were gang initiation.
