When were the Browning 1885 rifles made?

Made by Miroku, in Japan, as far as I know

If I remember correctly, they were made from about 1978 until early 2000's. Mine is a High Wall in 7 Mag and I bought it new in about 1992.

The Browning High walls I've owned were exceedingly accurate, and with the 28" barrel, really got the most out of slower powders.

Any body use a hammer extension to facilitate use with a scope?
If so, which hammer extension?

I have not bought or used a hammer extension on mine. I've thought about it especially when I have gloves on. I haven't done it just because i think they're ugly. I don't hunt with mine much any more anyway. It's too pretty to bang around in the mule or my truck. I did take it out and kill two axis deer with it this past April. It's still just as accurate as it always was.

The BPCR models were from around 1996, IIRC. They had US made Badger barrels, excellent.

Bear in mind also that a hammer extension will slow lock time. Not by a lot, mind you, but some.

Where can you find a hammer extension?

Doesn't Williams still make them?

Maybe so...I haven't looked. The 1885, especially the Low Wall, could really use a hammer extension.

Believe Carlsons makes a universal hammer extension.

I am absolutely in love with my traditional hunter in 38-55. Never had a jacketed bullet down its throat- and it does love Lord Black!

Hard to beat the older Brownings for price/value ratio. Both my Low Walls have lovely wood and metalwork. The Hornet is about as consistently accurate as any rifle I've ever owned. B78s are also great rifles, usually with nice wood too. Current Wichesters generally don't have as nice wood, but are still solid values. Not long ago, Browning was selling B78s (IIRC), that were really 1885s. Never saw one, so can't comment on the wood.

As a group, they rank highly among my favorite rifles, in case I didn't get that point across earlier😜

Have to agree Pappy, my 1885 Hornet is very accurate. It has great wood on it, better after I refinished it. Browning, in the mid 90’s, at least used some very dark stain. It is a great rifle, I would not hesitate to buy another.

We need to pit your Hornet against my .223 Low Wall some day. I'm sure the tension in the air at the range that day will be palpable!😁

Am looking at another Hornet. Might have to pull the lever on this one.

Not really possible. The hammer drops completely inside the reciever when the action is opened.
