Good morning, I just recently purchased my first "new to me" B.O.S.S. equipped rifle. I love having the recoil reduction the muzzle brake provides shooting at the bench, but I don't want to keep it on when hunting (this rifle was purchased with my 11 year old in mind) as I don't want to do any more permanent damage to hearing if I can prevent it. I have purchased the B.O.S.S. CR (Conventional Recoil) piece as well, and plan to switch it out for actual hunting.

My question for those that may have any experience with this contraption...once the sweet spot is found for my given load, is the B.O.S.S. recoil reduction system a direct change out for the B.O.S.S. conventional recoil system, or do I have to continue wasting ammunition in a search for a secondary sweet spot?

Thank you in advance

300winnie

PS...I did post this in a couple of different forums as I know people have their favorites.

The two different BOSSs work at the same setting on my 06. The firearm manual has suggested settings, and those were right on for me.

Same for me with an A-Bolt in 300Win.

They also work at the same setting on my heavy barrel A-Bolt .223.

I have the A-Bolt in 300 Win mag and the change in impact isn't enough to be bothered with. And, one needs to do a fair bit of shooting and comparing to notice the trend.

I had a heavy barrel .223 with a BOSS system. No instructions were included giving a suggested initial setting so it was a drawn out by guess and by golly exercise. However, since I never removed the device I never found out whether there was a shift in impact by doing so.

I bought an ‘06 in 1995 and it is my go to rifle ever since
I took the muzzle brake off by Dec 1995 and never put it back on
One errant discharge with the brake & w/o ear protection will give someone tinnitus for the rest of their life (like what happened to me)

I switched out the weight for a suppressor in 2015

I adjust that like a BOSS

It shoots from a 20” barrel hornady 165g SST super performance 2900 FPS, 1/2-3/4inch groups are easy to get, 5 shot clover leaf is possible. I get about 2” groups at 300y. That is after 25years of use.

My vote is to remove the brake and just use the weight, get low recoil loads for the 11yo (I have a 11yo too)

300Winnie:

I had a 338 with a Boss and did exactly as you are proposing, used the brake for bench/target shooting and then the CR for the field. I could not detect any difference on POI between the conventional and CR versions.

While perhaps not the most esthetically pleasing contraption, it did woork in my experience.

Thanks to everyone! I will verify for sure, but sounds like a simple swap.

Not what the paid help at Browning told me....

The CR weight is fluted to make it the same weight as the drilled BOSS weight. It should be a straight swap.
