For some stupid reason I'm thinking about breaking away from the old standby Cooper ST Maxx and trying something new on my diesel F350.

The Coopers have been fine and I might buy them again(for the 3rd time) but I also might try something new.

Lots of highway miles, fair amount of gravel and some off-road travel.

I don't want or need a true mud tire, an all-terrain is fine.

Kinda thinking about Toyo R/T's but heard(on youtube....) they are bad on ice. Hard tread compound? Are they harder than the Cooper I use now?

The tire hipsters are bragging up Nitto Ridge Grapplers but I 'heard' they get chewed up fast on gravel?

If I get around 30k miles out of the tires that is fine.

Thoughts on the Toyo or Nitto's?

Unless you ruin a sidewall I've had good luck with Michelins, but they don't make a true offroad tread.

I’ve not run either but when tire shopping my conclusion was the Toyo was a step above the Nitto even though they were the same parent company. I’m on my first set of BFG KO2’s on my diesel 2500. Make sure you get the ones labeled DT (for Different Tread) if you go with BFG’s. They are harder and longer lasting for HD trucks. I’ve had them in some pretty gnarly stuff and they did good. Plus they are quiet and seem stable towing. I know it’s not what you asked about but how can one not post on a tire, chainsaw, or electrical advice thread?

i have had good luck with yokohama geolanders on my trucks. i am around 27k on the latest set and theres still decent tread. i have been using them for years because the local tire shop recommended them and they are cheaper than a lot of tires. the goodyear radial t/a's that came on the truck were done at 19k and sucked on any slippery surface even when new. the geolanders do very well on wet grass, mud, etc. i also go down a lot of gravel roads and have had no problem with punctures, etc. i think they're about $800/4 for 17/70/275 mounted and balanced with free rotation and some sort of warranty i never needed.

Tire threads are like chainsaw threads, they go on like Old Man River.

Back to tires.

Toyo M55 are really tough to beat, but pricey.

I’ve switched to Firestone Destination AT tire. AT’s are on the truck. AT/2’s are going on the 4Runner.

Run toyo open country AT's on wife's sequoia and MT's on my old tacoma.
Michelin primacy came on my 2019 silverado 3500 utility truck. Fronts are worn pretty bad at 35,000.

I had cooper ST Maxx on the tacoma, IMO the toyo open country MT are really similar but wear better, ride smoother. YMMV.

Thanks for all the replies.

Yeah, I know better than to start a tire thread but I don't care!

Been researching a little here and there but a lot of the tire stuff is the flat brim big exhaust crowd and they just dick around waxing their tires and chit....

Some of the stuff is valid but when they get into the looks of the sidewall, etc, I know it's bullchit.

Jack, I wanna get M55's on our bale bed w/duals. Those fuuckers might be too much tire for me and the town and country pickup....lol

Nitto ridges in my f350. I have 20k on them and well over half the tread life left. I don’t drive in enough gravel to give that opinion but on and off road. They’re the best tire ive used. This is my 6th set on various trucks over the last 10-15 years or so

That's like saying I have this awesome cool hot chick that likes it bareback and giving head. But I wonder if there is anyone else out there that's better.

Them M55s ain’t too hot on ice unless you stud them in my experience Sam. But they last forever and go like the devil on gravel roads and muddy pastures.

I’m leery of dropping big bucks on Toyos after my last set. They were Open Country MTs and they sucked the big one. They weren’t particularly great off-road and they were shot in about 25-30k

I hate them rainbow tires. They always have a tendency to blow.

If the Toyo M55 were available in my size (315-75 R16) I would have given them a try on my F250 Super Duty. I ended up last week putting Cooper AT3 XLT's on it and they ride and handle great. I was looking for a tire that rode well on the highway but work fairly well in snow and on gravel. Since I lost my hunting lease last year my off-roading is limited.

Since you like Coopers the AT3 XLT's may do what you want if muddy pastures are not an everyday thing.
