With the rather brisk rise in the price of .223/5.56 ammo, are .22lr conversion kits worth looking into for keeping up with training/practice? What type of accuracy do these units produce - acceptable?

While I have a decent supply of .223 components available, I have plenty of .22lr on hand that I'm seldom using (in fact, I'm not even sure if my 10/22 has a scope on it right now.....).

They can work rather well just not as accurate as some would like. I bought a S&W 15-22 and don’t regret it. Lots of options.

I think CMMG has a pretty good following on the kits.

I just got a CMMG bolt, Right to Bear (made by CMMG) 9" 22lr barrel, and a couple CMMG mags from RTB, to make a dedicated 22 upper. I'll put it on an inexpensive standard stripped upper I've got laying around. After doing some research I came to the conclusion that running 22 lr through a 5.56 barrel with a 1/7-9 twist barrel was not the route I wanted to take because of accuracy concerns. I think the bolt only conversions are good for high volume practice where accuracy isn't a major concern. I'm hoping to do some small game hunting/pest control with mine, if it proves to be capable. I'll report back with performance once I get a handguard and barrel nut.

The 22 conversion kit in an AR is kind of a perfect storm for poor accuracy.

You've got a slow ass lock time, big swinging hammer introducing excess monkey motion, a long jump to the lands, an oversize bore with the wrong twist for 22 rimfire, and much longer barrel time vs 5.56.

I think it's not a horrible thing to have, and use. But you have to keep your expectations realistic.

I can't speak for the CMMG's accuracy but I"ve owned 8 of the Ciener .22lr kits over the years and in 1 in 9" or 1 in 12" rrifling twists, all grouped 2" at 50 yds, which is twice as much accuracy as you need for snapshoonting practice and plenty of accuracy for taking small game.

I'd be lerry of using one with a 1 in 7" twist. Ask about those at AR-15.com and rimfire central. Normal 22lr twist rates are 1 in 16".

My 50 yard 5-shot groups with the CMMG unit. 14.7" chrome-lined 1/7 twist.

Federal Target - 1.53", had one stovepipe ejection.

CCI Velocitor - 3.10", no malf's.

Aguila 60gr SSS - 2.09", no malf's.

Just used one to re zero a scope that I monkeyed after the windage zero screw stuck and threw it off a great number of clicks...
Seemed to do pretty well . Better than my back 40 improvised rest anyway...
