I purchased a Pre-64 358 Winchester and I have tried my Leica, Zeiss, Burris and Swarovski 30mm scopes on it, problem is the bolt rides the ocular.
Anyone able to solve this type issue on the Pre-64 actions?
Scope recommendations?
Thanks Darryle

Dunno if dimensions are the same, but I've mounted Leupold 1" scopes on my post-64 (circa '71) .338WM M70 over time. Always low rings. The 3.5-10x40, 2.5-8x36, and 1.5-5x20 all worked.

Is it a high comb or low? I have a 3.5-10x40 Leupold on a low comb with low rings that work. While close to the bolt handle I can still work the action without a problem. I used medium rings for the high comb with 1" scope and I believe mediums for the 30mm scope I had on another high comb. I have a 1.5-4x Bushnell on mine Mod 88 .358 Win I use it for brush and timber hunting..

Not sure exactly what you mean, “bolt rides the ocular”?
Bolt handle hits the ocular?
Please explain.

Weaver two piece bases and rings holding an old 2-7 gloss Leupold, perfect set up imho, my pre-64 FWT 243 has a scope drag line across the bolt handle from the previous owner/s.

DF Yes, it hit the ocular all the way back while cycling the bolt

Weaver makes rings with lateral adjustments. One could adjust those rings full left, away from the bolt handle and not have to go med. I like low. That set up may move the ocular enough to completely clear the bolt handle.
If it wasn’t a pre-64, I’d just grind and polish the bolt handle to clear the ocular.

Well, I found a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36mm in my stash still in the box, no clue where I got it or when.
What Talley Lightweight mounts can I get away with, Extra Low or Low?
On my 700 358 Winchester I used an extra low DNZ mount, would like to repeat that, but they don't make an extra low for the 70 standard action, unless I am not looking at their website correctly.
Thanks for the help DF, I really appreciate it.

That Pre-64 bolt handle may be why there isn’t an Ultra low.
Call Talley. Their techs are very helpful.

Ping pong balls for the win. Once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy. Dan Gable I keep my circle small, I’d rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

2.5-8 would be a dandy too

I have those on other rifles. Either would be excellent on that one.

That's essentially the same size as the scope on mine, now, an older Vari-X III. Don't know Telly measurements, but if it helps, Warne low rings work on my Model 70, plenty of clearance even for the 40mm objective when I had the 3.5-10x on there. Mine's a .338 Win Mag, so I haven't bothered to look at lightweight scope rings for it. I’m runnin 1.75/6 leupold on mine. Mine wears a 1.75-6X Leupold as well.
Oh, yeah. I'd forgotten, earlier. I had a 1.75-6x32 Vari-X III on mine for a while too. Heavy Duplex reticle (although I've since changed the reticle and repurposed that scope). FWIW, all for our the 1" Vari-X III or current VX-3i scope have approximately the same ocular lens size. -Chris

I ordered both the extra low and low Talley Lightweights from Talley direct. The only place that showed them in stock was opticsplanet. After the screwing they put to me on something I didn't order, I said I'd rather pay an extra $30 than give them a dime. Hoping they get here soon so I can get out and shoot this rifle.

The only Talley LW rings I have been able to mount the 2.5x8 Leupold to my pre 64’s and have the necessary bolt/scope clearance is MED! My lows would not work! The guns are Pre 64 standards. I recently went with 2 pc Leupold rings with reversible front and backs to get the necessary eye relief adjustment.

Sorry, the described Leupold mounts were two pc bases with med rings.
