I think it has to do with the close proximity of the camera to the elk and lens size. No one hunting really wants to lug a dedicated camera with a much wider lens around and most pics are probably taken just fitting the animal or its rack in the picture frame. If the pic had been taken from further back, the effect would probably be lessened.

I think it has more to do with the missing G3 on his right, which makes that beam look crazy long, especially when closer to the camera. Very cool elk, congrats!

Congrats to all the successful hunters. Not sure how some of you do it in that heat though. When it's in the 60's here for the beginning of bow season that is too hot for me.

Alaska moose I got last week on opening day (Sept 15). Limited quota area (draw) with about 1% odds of drawing. I've drawn it twice in the past 3 years. .264 Win Mag with 140 Partitions scooting along about 3,050 fps. Could have taken my Whelen but I used that on my last moose. 80 yd shot from about 35 feet up in a spruce tree. My buddy called him right in early in the morning. Shot at 6:30 - all meat packed back to camp (5 trip for each of us, 400 yds to the river) by 5:30 pm. 110# hind quarters. Probably a 3.5 or 4.5 y.o. moose. Only one horn as he busted the other off fighting - would have loved to seen the moose that kicked his butt.

Combo of sloshing in a puddle, raking on some alders and bull grunts. This one responded within about 5 minutes. Prolly walked 1/2 mile straight to us, grunting the entire way. Pretty fun, but my buddy got kind of nervous when the thing got real close. I picked up him about 150 yards away.

Funny thing was we both climbed the same tree the nite prior to the opener. The commotion of that and breaking some limbs for sight and shooting lanes brought a young bull (30" ?) right into us. He stayed there about 1/2 hr trying to figure out what was going on.

J - not a drop of rain the entire trip.

Also, they added two subsistence tags to this year's quota for Berners Bay. Heard two guys from Thorne Bay scored them. No idea whether they were successful - any word on your end?
