There is a local auction coming up Saturday that has what appears to be a B in 25-35. I know condition is everything, and all I've seen are a couple of pretty lousy photos. It doesn't appear new, but doesn't look that bad in the pics. I can't see any extra holes.

The barrel doesn't look very long (maybe 20-22 inches?). It is octagon. It also has a crescent buttplate. Looks like a blade type front sight, and a regular rear sight on the barrel (no tang sight).

Is this a desirable configuration? Old, original 99s don't come up for sale around here very often.

The short octagon barrel wasn't catalogued as a standard option, so you'll first need to determine if you think it's a special order short barreled rifle, or if somebody cut it down later. Both are possible, but truthfully it's more common that the barrel has been cut down.

If factory correct.. definitely desirable. Even if cut down, lots of folks would want to buy it.

I went back and looked again. I think it may be longer than I originally thought.

What the heck. Here's a link. It's the first auction. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Am I right in thinking the 25-35 is basically a necked down 30-30?

I don't know that I'd leave the link up if you want that gun for yourself. grin

Yeah, that looks like a full 26" barrel to me.

Ok. Thanks. I doubt anybody here would travel to Hillbilly, TN for one rifle, but who knows. Can you see any problems I'm missing from the pics? I know they aren't great.

They are low res pictures expanded on the web page, so tough to tell. Can't tell if it's original blue that's turned to patina, or if it's a reblue and blued lever. Top of buttplate to stock fit looks odd. Early gun, no perchbelly on it. So 1905 or earlier probably.

Worth a look in person, those pics suck.

Thanks. I expect a refinish, but it isn’t that far of a drive to find out.

Ditto. It's what put me off buying any of the couple .25-35's I ever stumbled onto. One of them had condition out the wazoo otherwise.

Hmmm. I thought this cartridge was originally loaded with smokeless powder. I guess they were still using corrosive primers?

Absolutely. Depending just how early, mercuric primers were around too- a double death wish for an unattended rifle barrel. Regular old corrosive primers that succeeded mercuric primers stayed in universal use way into the 1920's. When you think about it, it's kind of a miracle that we enjoy so many old rifles with nice bores. I guess the protocol of cleaning the gun immediately after use was drilled into most shooters. Except kids- why a huge number of early "boy's rifles" have crummy bores. I guess gun cleaning lessons didn't take hold until adulthood a 100 years ago! grin

We've had this discussion before. It seems a few of us here have noticed a higher rate of sewer pipe .25-35's than one would expect. Dunno. Could be coincidence because frankly I haven't looked up the arse of very many of them, but odd to me that every one I did was trashed.

Good looking auction! We only get one like that every couple years. Like the double sink among other items. Good luck!

I would be interested in the aeroplane pedal car. I bet I could make it go like a bat-out-of-hell!

If I was near, I would go look at that gun. The rest of the estate looks really nice. With my experience attending auctions, there is a direct correlation between the firearms and the estate being auctioned off. This guy had a nice place with lots of toys.

I'm not good at pricing but I'll through out a number of ...add $500 for it being a .25-35.

Maybe that will stir up other comments.
