The Doug Murray and David Royal books would be a good place to start.

I agree! On the surface, at least,. there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the nomenclature.

Murray's is a good guide - but it has a lot of inaccuracies. He did a heck of a job writing it without the benefit of the internet and having to do all the research by hand, but we've learned a lot since it was published.

i'd say the Murray and Royal books are THE most information you will find in one place. then one could peruse the past threads here. should someone ever compile all the past threads here into one reference book it would be amazing.

This is another useful book, though not what Murray or Royal is.
