Thanks Mule Deer. As always I think you answered everyone’s questions in a few short sentences with your expertise. In addition to saving us all a lot of time, frustration and money. I’ll buy you a beer next time I see you. 👍

Well I did know this powder is at its best with the heavier bullets, I saw a Quickload workup for the 129 gr LRX and RL 26 and thought it might be interesting.
I am pushing the LRX's and GMX's with RL 16 pretty happily.
This is just a unverified rolling conversation, it means little, but kinda fun at times.
I am just happy talking about the .270 WCF , instead of the newer short fats and the super short fats.

I have fiddled with R26 in multiple 270’s and think it is best with 150’s maybe 140’s. I use 53.3 grains of R17 with the 129 LRX for 3100.

With 150’s @ 3000 you will notice an increase in recoil compared to the 130’s @ 3100. Over many years, I have struggled to get 150’s to 2900 with older powders and am very happy to get 2900+ with R26.

If you want Big 7 levels of performance then buy a Big 7 or a 270 Wby. I have used the Big 7’s and the only thing they have over a 270 with optimum loads is more recoil and the rifles are usually heavier. A 7 pound Big 7 will really get your attention.

The 270 is a very good balance of bore, bullet weight, velocity, and rifle weight. Nuf said!

Totally agree with RinB on that! 150s at 3000fps are all I need from a 270. And with today's mono bullets like a 130gr TTSX I don't even need the 150s!

[quote=elkcountry]Very interested in this thread! I have a 270Win and shoot the 129gr. LRX and a 243Win and would love to have 1 powder to load both cartridges! I’m currently trying to do it with IMR-4831 but have yet to shoot my loads.

IMR 4831 is a good powder for both the .270 and .243. There's better for each but not for both.

Yep, I think RL-22 is about as good as it's going to get.

I loaded with IMR 4831 for long time before I finally tried H-4831. I don't get quite the MV out of the H but it's a little more accurate.
So I've pretty well settled on these three powders, with H-4831 my favorite. I've never tried
IMR-4350 in it but it's on my list.

Yeah, RinB is right on the money. The .270 pushing 150 NP's @ 3000 from a 22"tube is very fine.
Chop the Weatherby, Wsm or the large capacity 7mm tube down to 22" and see what you get.
I guess we could of asked Old Warren Page that question. His Mashburn must of bean deafening.

I chose RS Hunter in my 270Win w/ the 129 LRX, Fed 215, WIN brass. Velocity in the low to mid 3100s fps range, below any pressure signs. Best accuracy in a Rem 783, about 3/4" average @ 100yd, three shot group, so far. I consider my load development over w/ this load. Best Wishes. -Mark

I have gotten higher velocities with IMR 4831 than H4831sc with all 130’s! Mentioned previously that I have been using R17 with good results. Using R17 because I bought too much when it was being touted as the “new wonder powder”.

These days I prefer owning cartridges that have many good to great options powder wise. I see the sad faces of those who can’t find Retumbo and am glad I am not one of them.

Speer is showing 3171 fps at 60.3 grains of R26 in Federal cases for their 130 grain bullets. My loads are probably too hot and I will back down on them depending on case capacity.
