BEWARE! The social media is very bad. This is true, BUT the minute someone tells you they have an obligation to "fix it" what they are really saying is they will rig it even worse! Who is going to "fix" it? The same evil people who created it.

Use GAB! Now. The solution is not to "fix" algorithms. The solution is to broaden and decentralize ownership of social media.

Thanks EWF,

If you say it's worth the time I'll check it out.

Yep, I watched it last night after seeing this thread. Almost made me hesitate to pick up my phone this morning. I'm probably pretty safe as the Fire is the extent of my social media addiction, and I use adblock.

I haven't seen it. Does there seem to be a specific group of people that the documentary is trying to scare away from social media?

It’s worth watching. Social media is like playing the slots with a side of cocaine. Same brain games and the programers know it. Which is why their kids don’t get to play on social media.

I don’t have Netflix but the impression that I got from the Wikipedia page is that the “internet is bad” is the overall theme of what’s wrong with society.

It seems like misdirection.

The problems that society is facing run a whole deeper than the internet. The real problem is the left and the communist globalist society that they’re pushing for and there desire to control all things media and internet so that they can control us.

Really explains why we're becoming so polarized and the two sides have gotten so extreme in their views.

Basically it exposes the extent of the social media companies manipulating your reality through algorithms that know more about you than you know about yourself.

I won’t watch anything on Netflix. It’s the Halfican Channel.
It might be a great documentary. But those sorry Fuggers aren’t getting a single dime of my money!

Saw it. Was a bit biased

And imagine its affect on young generations with developing brains? Literally trained monkeys for the future to do your bidding. Look at all the dumb middle class white chicks and beta males at the BLM protests looting and destroying cities. And their parents have zero influence, control or connection with them because they wanted to be their friends.

Yep. Idiot white kids raised up getting participation trophies and playing video games out looting and burning with the same Groids that would happily kill them for their IPhone. Or $10 worth of crack. 😡

Just finished watching it and had to get on social media right away to talk about it.

Interesting to learn some of the history of its evolution and how the monetization affected it and just how insidious the AI algorithms behind it really are. And I can see how and why it affects younger folks even more - this is the only world they've known.

Their solutions recommended toward the end - government regulation mostly - seem unworkable since SM is an addiction and it's something with a huge demand. Prohibition of alcohol never worked and the war on drugs hasn't worked worth a damn, so simple regulations against social media won't work either, they'd just make the SM companies hide their manipulation in some other way. If history is any teacher they'd invariably provide opportunities for sort of actual criminal underground SM to appear. The idea of changing the monetization seems like the only real long term solution so it will be interesting to see how the really smart kids can do that.

Oh yeah, and I'm dusting off my old 80's VHS porn tapes and setting the clock on the VCR back to blinking 12:00, no more manipulative on line stuff for me...

The truly surreal aspect of this is that the country could be manipulated into a civil war not due to some direct action toward a political goal but simply as an unintended side effect of seeking advertising revenue.

Really isn’t pushed by any one group, it’s basically figured out how to amplify our own desires and create positive feedback loops and use it to get us to click and thus sell more advertising.

Some of the opinions thrown out on this thread really show its effectiveness.

MM

Seriously just watch it, it’s enlightening.

Once the companies knew about the statistics on teen depression and suicides they, in my opinion, are responsible. And as far as civil war, I completely agree, it could take us there.
