From what I've read he was a Republican, then changed and registered as an Independent. He's closing in on 50 years old now and to stay relevant and keep working in Hollywood / entertainment industry nowadays it's well known that being a active conservative Republican is the kiss of death. While he's been highly popular and successful as a action super hero / comedic type actor and currently ranks at the top of the highest earning actors, it's highly doubtful he'll ever be regarded as a top serious actor. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he's considering entering politics himself at some point in the future.
