Just purchased a nice 94 in 38-40 (BIg Bore Lever ???). I know the revolver loads are in the 1100fps range. Can the 94 be pushed higher, or is it a metallurgy thing. Serial number is 5xx, which falls after 1906 so assume it is smokeless powder friendly. Seems dating after 1906 by serial number is a guessing game.
thanks for the help
Charlie

To the best of my knowledge the 1894 was never chambered in 38-40. Is it possible you mistyped? Perhaps 32-40 or 38-55. The 1892 was the Winchester platform for the 38-40.

Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.

Marlin model 1894 in 38-40 is a possibility. A model 1892 with a 3 digit serial number would be made in 1892.
I was thinking the other day how much I used to hate Bill Clinton. He was freaking George Washington compared to what they are now.

Good point. I didn’t think of the Marlin 1894. And the OP didn’t state the brand.

Yes, shoulda put that Marlin thing in there. So, is the 1894 MARLIN a strong enough action to push the velocities into the 1500-1600fps range, a bump up to the Colt SAA loads.

I had a 38-40 ,1906 Marlin in a 94. My load was 16 gr of 2400, 180 gr cast bullets.Got it out of an old Sharpes manual. John Walsh in Washington state relined it for me

If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and pack saddles
