Let me start off with that I know nothing of photography or cameras. With that outta the way. Here’s what I know without Being too obvious about her Christmas gift.

She is brand loyal to Nikon, she prefers DSLR,And she is currently running a Nikon d3500??? I think it is.

She mainly shoots wildlife, birds, flowers, the dogs , etc.

Don’t really have a budget, as I don’t know a lot about these things. Let’s say sub 2k. What way would you guys lean?

Best idea would be to simply ask your wife what she thinks would be her best choice, rather than guess wrong. You could ask her, for example, what she thinks about Nikon's D850. Keep in mind that you could easily find mint condition used cameras.

Yes on the mint used versions. Might also consider lenses.

The fact is that Nikon and every other brand is getting away from the traditional DSLR and going mirrorless. Nikon is slow to that game but all new cameras announced in the last year are mirrorless and they announced the 3000 and 5000 series cameras are going away with no replacements. I agree to ask her what she had in mind and unless she has a lot of Nikon glass I would suggest she look at the other brands

That is a fact. I spent the last 4 days on zoom meetings with 26 Photo vendors at a virtual convention. I saw more power point presentations then anyone should see in a lifetime. All related presentations showed this trend.

How do the mirrorless systems work in cold weather (sub zero)? Curious, since one is relying on a display

following 1minute's question. I too am in the market to upgrade my old DSLR.

I was over at a friend's house and had the chance to handle his new Canon R5 with 100-500. The eye tracking on his moving dog was impressive. Ergonomics were good also. He likes the files he gets for his landscape photography. Of course the R5 would be beyond your 2k budget. I would look at a mirrorless with good eye recognition and tracking for her use with wildlife, birds, humans, and pets.

If she wants to stay with a dslr, a used Nikon D850 would be the best way, imo.

Problem with the Canon or mirrorless is that none of her lenses will work.

Like any other camera, Mirrorless cameras will work as well as any camera using a lithium battery. Some mirrorless systems are better in any weather

I've been very happy with my Fuji XT2.(mirrorless)
The XT4 will have faster focus, better tracking etc. but is larger and a little heavier.
Fuji lenses are known for their quality and clarity.
The XT series is weather resistant and built much like Nikon film cameras of the 70's and 80's.
