I had to go to Fleet Farm for a couple things for the house, so cruised sporting goods real quck while I was there. The shelves are pretty empty. If you run factory ammo and will need some for this fall, you'd best get some while you hopefully still can. Anything besides 30-06 might be a little challenging to find. Forget about pistol ammo. It's all gone.

Yeah fleet farm sucks for anything sports. Their new business model sucks since they got bought out a few years ago. This past spring I asked about some fishing reels they were out of. I asked when they were going to get more, and the clerk said “In February. We order for the season, and when it’s gone we don’t have any more.”

But, handgun ammo is tough to find anywhere

I expect it’s way too late for any sort of selection, maybe even any period. Been checking online when I was buying other stuff, and what I saw was pretty skimpy.

Just as with reloading supplies, you have to plan way ahead. I bought a 5-pounder of BH209 months ago, because in the past 10-ounce jugs disappeared around here very early, and if you could find it, was $40-$50.

If you need any, better get on the stick!😜

I just looked at Midway for some 7mm08 ammo and they do not have any. The 7mm-08 whitetail thread got me wanting to take out my 7mm-08. I was out of town this past Sunday and stopped by Sportsman's Warehouse and their ammo was very low. The Tikka Superlite's were on sale so I picked up a .223 but no ammo was available. Thankfully I have some .223.

You can't even get 30-06 or 30-30 here. I'm well stocked on that but it turns out I don't have any 270 and I can't find that either.

When I went last October they were plumb full of every flavor. Any thoughts as to what might have changed?

Spent Sunday at Denver Cabelas, Sportsman's Warehouse and Bass Pro. Empty shelves unless you shoot a 25-35, 25-06, or 300 mag. No .270.30-06,30-30, etc. nothing.

Fortunately, I've got enough to last me for the foreseeable future, but range time will be drastically limited.

I went into our local firearms/outdoor supplies store a few days ago to get an Off-road Vehicle tag for our Polaris Ranger. The shelves were stocked with guns, ammo, and reloading components. I guess this shows people around here don’t wait until they’re out of ammo/components before resupplying! memtb

It's been too late to shop for deer season ammo here for 3 months. There's some 300wsm, some Nosler, some Weatherby, but not much else.

Likely contributing factors:

More new owners buying fireams?

Panic buying?

Less production due to covid shutdowns?

.....of course hunting season coming up but that would have been the same last year.

The local farm supply had tons of 6.5 Creedmoor. No .223, 308, 30-06, just some oddball magnums. So I guess you Karen’s can get your gay 6.5 on! LOL!

Yeah, my buddy was trying to find some 30-30 for his son's rifle. He used it up at some kids sight-in event. I stopped by the LGS to see if they had any for him and it was gone, gone, gone. There were 3 people waiting for the UPS driver to deliver the case of 9mm the shop ordered.

I think it's all of this, plus I've read that ammo makers are focused on 9mm, 5.56 NATO, and 45 ACP.

Local gun shops here have a little bit of 30-06, 308, 300 WM, 300 WSM, and 338 WM but mostly premium stuff. There's plenty of 7mm Mag and 270 Winchester. Most of them won't sell you more than two pounds of powder and a brick of primers.

Everything else is gone.

That's probably true. MN is FULL of weekend warriors that hunt 2 days a year. 90% of them have .30-30, .270, or .30-06's. They probably can make a box last 10 years if the scope doesn't get knocked off.

No doubt they are. A shooter will put more 9mm or 5.56 rounds down range in one session than most hunters will shoot hunting rifle ammo (30-30/.270/30-06/etc) in a lifetime. Not all hunters of course, but the average.

Observations from Texas.

Walmart still has a fair assortment of standard cup and core ammunition, federal and Winchester.

Academy has been hit and miss with very limited selection however lots of .270 everywhere.

Last I checked {a couple days ago} Budsgunshop still had .270's.

Edit.....Yep, just checked and they still have a selection of .270.
