I keep a rifle outside on the patio during the summer months.,it goes out about 0800 and I let it back in when it gets dark.

I wipe the dust off and clean the scope every once in awhile. Place it muzzle up in a corner by the door for overnight.

So... one afternoon, I was sitting outside hunting coyotes and considering my good fortune and I noticed a mud dauber fussing around the muzzle.... so I waved him off and checked. Sure enough the muzzle was already packed with mud. Had to use a cleaning rod get to the mess out.

So, I taped the muzzle.

Tactical tape will keep a bullet from exiting the barrel.

Snow (and possibly mud) is the issue in Nov. and Dec. here in PA and NY.
Blue painters tape goes well with both stainless and blued barrels.

Has anyone ever heard of a verified case where tape caused a barrel, rifle or shotgun, to burst? I doubt it.

As I posted above, Indy, it'd be just about impossible in a rifle. But there have been shotgun barrels burst by even minor obstructions like wasp nests, dirt, and even a lodged wad from a previous weak round. I think a simple 'net search would bring up examples.

Toy guns have orange barrels. Don't the deer laugh at you?

What about athletic tape?
Like the kneelers use to keep their pads on...

That's part of the reason I posted. I haven't heard of any cases but I don't read a dozen shooting rags or spend hours searching the web for that kind of stuff either.

Good luck with whichever you choose.

Hey VG,
If this is not a joke, where do you buy the little black balloons made for this purpose?

party supply places/ departments, variety stores.

I always have electrical tape around home though, and I usually put a spare wrap around the barrel just behind the taped muzzle, should I need it in the field..

Amazon has these covers....$10 for 10. Tape's a lot cheaper.

They also have these, $3 for 40.

Go cheap - just use one of the fingers of a medical glove - cut it off - or don't and leave the rest of the glove hanging there so you have another finger to use if you take a shot.

Do you wash your hands after taping your muzzle?

I wonder if the pinky toe cut off a worn out pair of Darn Tough socks would work?

Oh, wait, I forgot..........the don't wear out..............and if they do, even after 6 years, they'll give you a new pair. (and some will give a person crap for making use of a warranty too).

I've used tape, but I kinda like the finger cot and balloon idea.
