Looking at getting a 28 Nosler for my elk hunting cartridge. I like to try different calibers and this is one i havent tried yet. Any 28 Nosler owners have any input? Or previous owners?

Just guessing, but I bet it’ll work!

You gonna pony up for one if the lightweights?

Pick the right bullet and you're golden. Hammers barns ttsx or lrx Nosler accubonds are your huckleberry

My 7mm Rem Mag is the same caliber. Kills elk right now within my skill range.

Come to think of it, my 7mm-08 is the same caliber and the same could be said of it.

Probably not much better of a great elk killer. Load with some of the excellent 175/180’s it carries a lot of mail.

I run the 7 Mashburn Super and couldn’t be happier with it. 28 Nosler is just more of the same.

THIS ^^^^^^ is why I have chosen the 7 RM as my 1 for all Big Game cartridge.
If Mr Phil says (and he does) the 06 is 'entirely adequate for Brown Bear'.... the 7 RM is not less.

The bullet will hit the dirt a little harder on the other side.

I’ve shot a bunch with 7mmSTW with 160 Accubonds at >3300fps. Kills fine...and shoots flat. Doesn’t rock them like a 340wby but is far more than adequate. I acquired the STW as a dual purpose longish range elk/mule deer rifle (this was before the advent of the heavy projectiles so I limited myself to 5-600yds). Although it shoots flatter, today I tend reach for my 340wby for elk and a 300wby for mule deer (it is a backup for both). I’ve killed several whitetails with the STW in the 2-300 yard range. Clearly overkill....but I like using my rifles.

Great feedback. Appreciate it. I know it will work as i have killed a elk with a 6.5 creedmoor. I like to try different calibers and this one peaked my interest.

28 Nosler is a fine round. One needs to go in realizing barrel life for some has been 850 rounds if that matters to you.

I bought a beater 7mm Weatherby several years ago with intentions of converting it to a 7mm STW. In my research, several sources cited accuracy/ load issues with the STW. Don’t ask who wrote that - too long past my recall, but after I fired the Weatherby and chronographed some factory ammo and handloads I found that the velocities were comparable to the STW and they are loaded to the same pressures. No shade on the STW, but if I were looking for a big 7, the 28 Nosler would be the ticket! Happy Trails

My primary elk rifle this year wail be my .280 Rem stuffed with a 150g ABLR.@ 2899fps. That load still carries over 2100fps and 1500fpe at 660 yards (at 7000 feet altitude), well past the 600-yard limit of my practice and max limit. Considering in 38 years my max range shot at elk has been 487 yards (2300fps, 1760fpe), I'm not at all concerned whether it is up to the task. A 28 Nosler would do the job just as well, but not significantly better. The difference is the .280 Rem will do it with far less recoil and cost.

Some above had suggested a 7mm RM. That is what I started out with, 38 years ago, and have used to take more elk than all my other rifles combined. And most of those years my loads were 160g bullets at around 2900fps. Shades of the .280 Rem load I will be using this year.

28 Nosler will bounce off. Years of killing elk with 25-06, 30-30, and 270 has helped them become resistant to small bore rounds like super bugs to antibiotics. 😇😂

I hear ya but I have graphed my 7 RM loads with a reliable chrono.

139 HBTSP — 3300 fps...
150/154 Nos or HSP—- 3100+ fps. Both loads give good case life.

I’m not focused on FPE...Trajectory is my Puddin.
