The first centerfire rifle I bought, long years ago, was a neatly sporterized 1898 with a ratchet rifled barrel.
I'll die with it.
Some of you may have the same commitment to a Savage rifle or two.... 👍 In addition to 99s I'm also a sucker for Krags and 03 Springfields; milspecs and sporters alike. As of late I've also been corrupted by a member of this forum into the world of 1885 Winchesters/Browinings, 44 and 441/2 Stevens, and Ballards. And judging by the humble size of my wallet it may be time for me to start knocking over convenience stores and banks! I'll keep the motor running while you go in.

... I'm also a sucker for Krags and 03 Springfields; milspecs and sporters alike. You and me both! I consider myself lucky to have an American, Danish and Norwegian Krag, all sporters. And an 03 sporter to go with my military versions. Springfields of many colors are one of the few passions that have remained constant in my life for over 50 years now. Need a Norwegian Krag too I guess!

BTW all - I pulled the forearm on the 1940 gun today and it is correctly numbered to the rifle.
Knowing that, I'm guessing that the forend was modified by someone. But - could it have been a factory "quickie", maybe put together in 1941 from available the way some were?
It is odd the way the checkering pattern looks right but is basically scratched on, rather than being properly checkered into the wood....

Right. But the forend IS correctly numbered.
Any chance that it simply left the factory with an uncheckered foreend but a checkered buttstock?
And someone got brave enough to wing it one night after a little booze?
It is a little puzzling to me....

I think somebody banged the heck out of it, then sanded all the dings off. Also took off the checkering and most of the schnable.

i have read of Charlie Russel checkering a friends rifle by a camp fire with a pen knife, maybe you have a gold mine!
seriously though that was a poor attempt to restore the original checkering.
