Just picked up a nice Sako Vixen in .223 Rem. Serial number puts it at about 1972 manufacture, and it is marked with "T Garcia Corp . . Wash. D.C." on the underside of the barrel in front of the forearm. It came with the "old style" Sako factory scope rings.

Just in case I will need to change to scope rings of a different height, what modern scope rings fit these older Sako L461 actions? TIA!

Sako lows with a Leupold Gloss M8 6x36 on my 222 Vixen for the last 45 years.

Check the underside, 1" rings will be marked 25.4 mm, Sako did market 26 mm rings in Europe as well. I just picked up an AI bring back from Germany. It was wearing an M8 6x42 Gloss Leupold in the same rings as you have. Except they were 26's. The previous owner had made shim tape out of fiberglass strapping tape. You couldnt tell in the pix. I wasnt happy, but I kept the scope/ rings with the rifle.

I do believe that any rings that accommodate the Sako dovetail taper will work on your Vixen

The majority of my Sakos wear the Leupold/Redfield bases and leupold dovetail rings. Also have Ziess and Sako Optilock.

Congrats on your new rifle, I'd go through hell and high water to run those factory rings, they look right, are high quality, expensive, and cool as hell, I just centered the windage adjustment on an old B&L Elite 2.5-10x40 for a Sako 30-06 I got awhile back, then used the built in windage adjustments on the rings to center them and the scope over the bore centerline, then tightened it all down, i'll shoot the rifle for accuracy today.

Have a similar vixen in 222, Came with the factory low rings, but i like the s&k for appearances. Available in gloss. The small action s&k Bases for sako are a bit smaller than what geedubyas pic shows, more dainty, and “look right”. Weigh about the same, or bit over half what leupold sako rings weigh

Just looking through some bases and rings and came across a one piece Stith mount for an L461. Will post pics in the Image Gallery later today.

Pics posted in Image Gallery. There are also two piece Stith bases that I believe will work on the L579 Forester, the L61R Finnberar and the VL63 Finnwolf.

Whatever rings/ bases you decide upon, if they have a set screw, don't use them!
