Worth it?

I'd like a short barreled rifle for bad weather days.. LGS has 2 one in a CDL in 260 and a HS in 7-08

Yes...I would opt for the 7-08 simply because I had a CDL and was not as impressed with it as I thought I'd be. Little TOO light up front.

Same issue I had with this rifle in its original guise. Howa LW in .308, probably not as light as a 7, but just as whippy in the front. Unscrewed the pencil barrel and replaced it with a Sporter-weight 20" McGowen precision, also in .308, and the balance is a lot more neutral.

I took the SHV off and put the 2.5-8X36 Leupold back on. It wasn't too noticeable at first, but once I did, the top-heaviness was bothersome.

I also took the opportunity to add pillars to the stock, bed the action, and add a Timney trigger. I have declared it to be in an operational status in anticipation of the biggest Small-Deer contest there is.

Have you considered a Vanguard Compact?

Except for the 7 MS, the rest of the 18.5" and 20" Remington Sevens are butt-heavy.

I like model seven's. Is it a perfect rifle all of the time? No but it is a awesome rifle a lot of the time. For east coast woods hunting it's as good as any imo. The 20" variety is better.

I have a CDL 7/08. I've carried it once in 4 years. I much prefer the feel of the Mountain Rifle over the 7.

I have a couple. A .243 FS and a .350 KS. Both shoot great. They are addicting in that once you carry them they make other rifles feel clubby.

The code on the left side of the barrel is FA. I believe that makes it 2003 manufacture.

I have a M7 CDL that no longer resembles a CDL. It now wears a SPS contour barrel cut to 22" and a M7 predator stock. Balance and accuracy are improved, but in hindsight, I should have simply bought a 700 ADL and added bottom metal.

I've owned a few model 7's. The one I liked best was one of the Predator models they were closing out a couple years back. They had 22 inch barrels of fluted magnum contour. Just a joy to carry in the field.

That said, I've been looking awfully hard at one of those 7/08's in the HS stocks.

"F" isn't a month code, month assembly codes are these twelve letters, B-L-A-C-K-P-O-W-D-E-R-X, January thru December.

The last two "A" code years were 1980 and 2006.

The year code for 2003 was "X".
