Has anyone here hunted this WMA? Would like to know anything about this WMA that someone would be willing to tell.

Thanks!

I’ve been there a bunch quail hunting. The red dirt roads are bad if it rains. I’ve seen several great mule deer bucks and several nice white tails there. It’s a nice place. Look out for rattlers, seen some nice ones. The showerheads in the hotel in town were made for dwarfs. The catfish at the restaurant is great on Friday nights. There are lots of ugly girls in that area, bring sacks for them.

There are a few windmills with watering troughs. That would be the place to hunt or along the creek( Brazos River begins there I think or maybe Colorado) The place is big, 30 to 40,000 acres. Bobwhites and Blue quail on the place. Grass burrs out the ass. We had to boot the dogs. It’s a hell of a fine place if it’s had a little rain.

I think there a couple ponds too.

Place is covered with a dwarf oak bush called "shinnery" that provides a lot of acorns. It also provides a lot of cover for deer to hide in. There are plenty of feral hogs as I had to beat them to the doves I shot there. Rattlesnakes are more than just common. Seen a couple monster Whitetails the times I was there but only Mule deer does.

Thanks for the input. I guess I should have been more specific.

I'll be hunting Mule deer bucks there in early December. I was hoping the rattlers would be dormant by then. you can also take a whitetail doe, but I don't plan on spend any time messing with a doe. I'm going there hoping to get a Mule deer buck. The minimum size on the buck is a 20" outside spread.

I'll be there on Dec. 7-11. Any ideas about the name of the pastures to try to hunt at for Mule deer bucks? Should I spot and stalk or try to hunt on the river? maybe look for saddles or trails to watch? I sure probably all off the above.

I would like to get some kind of an edge to up my success rate.

Thanks!

The West Pastures are good. I saw good mulie bucks scouting before the hunt (yes they let me the day before and the morning before the hunt) sparring in Lone Canyon. I had the number one draw so I took that unit. After that I saw mainly slickhead mulies and some lesser bucks.

I would get high on the canyon walls and mostly glass the other side and the canyons. In the late afternoon I would go to the waterholes. This was a late October hunt so they weren't in rut. The dates you are there should give you some rut activity.

No one connected on our hunt but some others saw bucks in the western units. Being archery and not rifle was a hindrance.

Saw whitetail s in the eastern units where it flattened out but some of the WT bucks are in the western units.i don't know if your just limited to mulies but some of the WT bucks get pretty big there.

Let me know if you have other questions. I'm no expert on Matador but have some experience.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

Oh and the rattler s out there will move when it is cooler so watch out.

Heck of a draw. Yes, good chance that the rattlers will still be on the move.

And the "shinnery" makes them hard to spot but they were not aggressive like east Tx cottonmouths can be.
