That sounds like excellent results. According to the internet, deer will just swat the 38 Special down or it will bounce off their hide. Although your shot was aided by a longer barrel apparently, for a hollowpoint to nearly pass through the deer lengthwise and drop the deer on the spot is not bad performance at all.

I used to shoot my 6” 686 a lot. The only deer that I can recall was a younger buck. Shot him through the shoulders at about 20 yards. He did a little 10-yard half circle then crashed to the ground stone cold dead. It would have been a 158gr XTP HP with 15.5-16.0gr H110. No idea on velocity.

I was sent a S&W 500 to review when they first came out in 2003 and it shot so well that I bought it.
Have only taken whitetail with it and may again this year as I have a neighbor who is not a blood brother, so the goal is to drop them as fast as possible.

When the 357 was introduced somebody (forgot who) killed a polar bear with it to prove it was amazingly powerful!. smile I shot two whitetail doe with a .357 Ruger SP101, 3-inch barrel (low velocity), and 158 g Hornady XTP. Worked well at less then 40 yards. I killed one whitetail buck with my Ruger Blackhawk in 45 colt and 250 grain hard cast. Made a big hole all the way through. I killed two whitetail and two mule deer with a 30-30 Ackley Improved T/C Contender with a 14-inch barrel and various bullets. Even with this small sample, I'm pretty confident that with my average handgun shooting skill, I'm best off keeping my distance small and hone my stalking skills. Any of the chamberings are capable for the animals you list. They all work for black bear too!

I have a ruger super blackhawk in 44 mag with a 10.5" barrel. It has a simons pro hunter 4x32 pistol scope on it. I shoot the hornay leverloution ammo out of it. I have shot a few does with it an absolutely love it. I think a 357 would do fine for all the animals you are planning on hunting, I got the 44 because I have a ruger 44 carbine and I will carry both the rifle and the pistol on the same hunt and only have to keep up with 1 type of ammo.

Al Georg in the early years used the .357 mag successfully in Alaska to take alot of game including sheep and bear I think. He wrote it up in Field and Stream I believe.

I believe it was Wesson Himself that took the polar bear with the 357.

We shoot pigs here in thick forest with 38 special in lever guns loaded to 9mm carbine power with 135 grain GDHP. About 1050-1150fps at impact, short ranges to about 50 yards, usually at dark under spotlight. We also shoot them with 22 Mag (certain angles only) just to outline we do minimalist style hunting. Some people arent into it.

I leave Sunday for eastern Oregon bull elk with a revolver. No rifles making the trip.

I've hunted with a lot of different handguns but these days it's almost exclusively a Contender with a 10" MGM barrel in 357 Herrett.

Thank you Sir. Due to past business requirements this will be the first chance to hunt elk in about 4 years and I am pumped. My son drew the same tag but it did not get home from his last deployment in time to make the trip so it will be a solo adventure.

Whether bow, muzzleloader or modern gun hunting I always have a handgun on my belt, while bow or muzzle loader hunting, more for two leggers or the rare instance one may need a pistol for black bear, hog or mountain lion defense, those would be standard EDC guns, DW 1911 10mm, G21 45 ACP or P226 357 Sig.

Modern gun hunting will see a Colt SAA 45 loaded with 270gr cast bullets over black powder, FA 454 with 325gr A Frames, and new for this year, FA '97 in 44 Special, 5.5 inch barrel, round butt, it's loaded with GS custom 255gr Keith bullets over 4227, anything gets close enough, the revolvers will be used, also used revolvers on a couple three deer over the years as I walked up and had them look at me, no need to prolong the suffering.

Polar bear with a 357 was Robert Peterson, as in Guns & Ammo, Hot Rod Magazine and others. I don't like the 357 or the 44 Mag any more. I prefer the 45 Colt for the increase in power without the snort. I have dropped a few whitetail with the 44 mag. Mostly helping drop deer that should have known they were dead. I have dropped a doe at very close range with the Ruger Old Army, cylinder as full of 3F as I could get and still seat a dead soft lead round ball. Found the ball under the skin on the other side. If you shoot a lot and you are close I see a dead deer. But I have made the decision for ME that the 45 Colt is the smallest I will use. Maybe the Contender pistol. Be Well, RZ.

Yeah, a Super red (or black) hawk .44 with some HSM bear loads will do the job for sure. Barrel length is up to you. My brothers got a red-hawk with the 5.5 and that thing is dang accurate. Its what he carry's in Montana, and also keeps on hand during bear season in case he can get in close to use it.

I enjoy sneaking up on pigs if I catch the wind right. I like 45ing the SOBs. They have a terrific nose, but I don’t think they see as well as a deer.
