"On our first attempt to hunt Rhinoceros, we went to a territory where they were supposed to be plentiful. After having made the trip to this location, in the afternoon along with our guide and gun bearers, we engaged one of the local natives, whom we thought would be better acquainted in the immediate vicinity.

We left the hunting car late in the afternoon and all started out on foot. We spent some time walking through the brush, up and down the hills, and through some valleys. We heard one Rhinoceros in the brush, but evidently he got our scent and disappeared. We kept on walking and it seem that our minds were so occupied with the hunting that we didn't realize that it was getting late in the day. Before we realized how late it was, it started to get dark, and our guide thought that we must be at least three or four miles from our hunting car. We immediately started back towards our hunting car. Fortunately the moon was full and was coming up rapidly, so in a few minutes it was quite moonlight.

After walking some distance, it seemed that our gun bearers and the local native we engaged, stopped and were involved in some sort of an argument. However, inasmuch as the argument was in the Swahalli language, it didn't mean much to us. However, we did understand that they were confused in directions! One wanted to turn right, and the other to the left. Inasmuch as we had depended upon them entirely for guidance, we didn't have any idea as to where we were, or which way to go. One of the gun bearers started off to the right, and the local native started off to the left, both disappearing almost immediately in the bushes, leaving us standing there, wondering what it was all about. However, in just a few minutes, they both came back, and decided that they were both wrong, and we then started off in an entirely different direction. In the meantime the moon had moved high into the sky, so ti was light enough so that we could distinguish trees and objects for two or three hundred feet, which was very helpful.

After continuing for some distance, hoping that we were going in the right directions, our guide made a sudden jump, as we all spotted a large dark object directly in our path. We were near some large trees, and guide immediately instructed us to get behind one tree and the others behind another. He instructed us to stay behind these trees, and if any animal charged us, to keep going around the tree....We all stood perfectly still, and the object we were watching remained perfectly still. The object was perhaps 150 to 200 feet from us. We, of course, all had our guns ready, having been instructed by the guide not to shoot until necessary.

While waiting behind these trees, trying to figure a good way out, the natives with us started to let out shrill war whoops, and after two or three of them, there was a rustling noise, and the dark object disappeared, and we could hear the animals running through the brush on both sides of us. The guide and natives now recognized the large dark object as having been a herd of buffalo. From the noise in the brush, there must have been at least 8 or 10 or them in the herd. After we were sure that all of the buffalo had disappeared, we continued our walk back to the hunting car. We had left our native driver in the hunting car, and he was about as glad to see us as we were to see him. We then drove back several miles to camp, where we enjoyed a good dinner and, of course, a few good buffalo stories."
