Congrats on a great bull and fulfilling a long held dream!
You'll be grinning all year thinking about the hunt, so when are you going back?

Awesome job. I’m glad to see the snow, we’ll be there next week for third rifle.

Congrats on fulfilling a dream!

Oh, and what sled is that? It looks handier that deep john boat looking one.

This post makes my day. Thank you so much for sharing this great news with us.

I went to college in Colorado and it took me 5 hunting seasons in Colorado to shoot a nice elk and some people many, many more.

Count your blessings.

Two years ago when I turned 50, I decided I better get going before I was too old. A friend and I put in for mule deer tags knowing we would need a preference point for that area and started planning for my first western big game hunt. I told my buddy I was buying a bull tag also because I didn't know if I'd ever get to do this again. 3 days into my first ever elk/mule deer hunt the good Lord graced me with more than I was hoping for. This was in Colorado Unit 77. It was OTC and DIY in the San Juan NF. We did have some help from a local that pointed us in the right direction though.

For those that care, I was shooting a 7mm RM I bought in 1985 when I was still in high school. I'd always planned to take it elk hunting, and it finally got to eat more than our local whitetails. I was shooting 150gr combined technology bullets under 63gr of I4350.

In general draw/OTC areas across the West success rates are almost never higher than 25% or so and many are much lower than that. To go into an area totally "cold" and come out with your bull is one heck of an accomplishment. Congratulations!

Now, how do you get the bullets to work when you put them under the powder? laugh

Thanks everyone. It’s been a great week. More than I could ever hope for. Just as an update, we’ve continued to hunt the rest of the week looking for a respectable mulie. Last night lightning struck twice as my partner took this great bull less than 500 yds from where I shot mine Monday. It was another long night getting it off the mountain, but well worth the effort.

Mine was about 9500. The second one was about 9300.

congrats on your first colo. bull elk. bbassi.

I was two units north of ya 2nd season and shot my cow opening day so I didn't have to hunt "the snow". Did have to pack out meat in it and we too used sleds. Can move a lot of meat in a sled over snow. I have a hunch that the fire has been lit and you'll be back for more..
