I thought I'd share my first time elk hunting. I've wanted to do this since I was about 12, but many reasons it just never happened. Two years ago when I turned 50, I decided I better get going before I was too old. A friend and I put in for mule deer tags knowing we would need a preference point for that area and started planning for my first western big game hunt. I told my buddy I was buying a bull tag also because I didn't know if I'd ever get to do this again. 3 days into my first ever elk/mule deer hunt the good Lord graced me with more than I was hoping for. This was in Colorado Unit 77. It was OTC and DIY in the San Juan NF. We did have some help from a local that pointed us in the right direction though.

We got creamed with a storm Sunday into Monday, but we hunted anyway.

About 5pm Monday when the snow stopped, this guy walked out of the black timber onto a cut I was watching with about 16 cows, calves and at least one spike.

walking up to get the rest of the meat.

Monday night I packed out 75 pounds or so of backstraps, tender loins and as as much of the hamburger meat I could. The next morning I borrowed this sled and managed to get all 4 quarters out in one trip. It was only 1.25 miles off the road but about 1000 vertical feet so I was super happy not to have to make multiple meat trips. I'm too old for that chit!

For those that care, I was shooting a 7mm RM I bought in 1985 when I was still in high school. I'd always planned to take it elk hunting, and it finally got to eat more than our local whitetails. I was shooting 150gr combined technology bullets under 63gr of I4350.

Congrats on getting your elk. Great timing when a snow storm breaks and the critters move again. Gotta have the luck of the blue tape too.

Great Job.

I used a 7mm I purchased at 17 thinking of elk when I bought it to take my first bull at 43. Haven’t missed an elk hunt since in 17 years. Talk about an addiction we leave next week & I can’t wait hard to sleep or think about work.

This post makes my day. Thank you so much for sharing this great news with us.

I went to college in Colorado and it took me 5 hunting seasons in Colorado to shoot a nice elk and some people many, many more.

In general draw/OTC areas across the West success rates are almost never higher than 25% or so and many are much lower than that. To go into an area totally "cold" and come out with your bull is one heck of an accomplishment. Congratulations!

Now, how do you get the bullets to work when you put them under the powder? laugh

Thanks everyone. It’s been a great week. More than I could ever hope for. Just as an update, we’ve continued to hunt the rest of the week looking for a respectable mulie. Last night lightning struck twice as my partner took this great bull less than 500 yds from where I shot mine Monday. It was another long night getting it off the mountain, but well worth the effort.

congrats on your first colo. bull elk. bbassi.

I was two units north of ya 2nd season and shot my cow opening day so I didn't have to hunt "the snow". Did have to pack out meat in it and we too used sleds. Can move a lot of meat in a sled over snow. I have a hunch that the fire has been lit and you'll be back for more..

Bob we saw lots of Mule deer but none that we wanted to shoot. I personally saw 2 real good ones that I might have taken, but they were not dumb enough to give me a chance to get the scope on them.
