I saw a Shilo Sharps 45-110 for sale and it had two designations under the "Calibre 45". They are 2 1/10 and 2 7/8. I don't know what this means. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Since the 2 1/10 is centered I would say it was originally a .45-70 that has had the chamber lengthened and is now the 2 7/8” or .45-110

That's what I questioned the guy but he didn't know, and of course I didn't either.

If you have the serial number call Shiloh and they can tell you if they did it. You could also post this on the Shiloh forum and either Kirk or one of the resident experts could tell you how they mark them

This is a gun for sale on GB. I have been in contact with the seller and he says it's on consignment. I passed along the information pacecars told me along with the actual length of a 45/70. I am sure now that the gun was originally a 45/70 and was rechambered and restamped to the 45/110. He said he was going to call Shilo Sharps and verify the caliber. BTW, could you shoot a 45/70 out of that gun? Would it be like shooting a 22 short out of a gun designated 22short, 22 long and 22 long rifle? Of course, with a little bit more recoil,

You could but I wouldn’t do it unless an absolute emergency and my life depended on it. It can ring the chamber and then when you fire a .45-110 it would get stuck in the chamber not to mention accuracy would probably really suck with basically a super long free bore for the .45-70

You could fire a 45-70 cartridge in that rifle, but accuracy is going to suck big time, and if done very much you are quite likely to gas cut/ruin the chamber and throat. It is nothing like a 22 short in a long rifle chamber, the difference in case length alone is 7/8 of an inch.
If you're considering buying that rifle, you should first do due diligence and find some 110 cases, or get your name in line with Shiloh to send it to them to have it rebarreled if you don't want to use it as a 110.

Thanks for all the advice. Not really interested in the gun because of the rechambering. Probably shouldn't even be looking at these guns, but they pique my interest!!

Funny I came across this post. I was able to purchase this Shiloh locally, and in the case it had paperwork verifying the factory caliber change to 45 -2 7/8 (45-110), as well as the addition of a saddle ring and bar, a tang Soule sight and globe front sight with cards. Accompanying the rifle was a batch of 45-110 ammo. The original build order did list it as 45-70. It is unfired since it was re-chambered. The owner was older and no longer wished to lift the weight around. Also accompanying it is a .22 lr sleeve insert, Hadley eyecup, Quigley style gun scabbard. Originally ordered with semi-fancy wood, pressed bone case hardening, and considering its new condition without the 3 year wait, I had to check this off my bucket list.

That's a good one. I was kind of put off by the rechambering, but it probably won't hurt the functioning of the rifle. Let us know how it shoots.

A quick call to Shiloh in the morning can confirm a factory re-chamber job, I would not be afraid of the rifle if they indeed confirm, also would not fire 45-70's in a 110 chamber, you can do it ALL with a blackpowder loaded 45-110 Sharps and 500+ grain bullets, target shooting from 5 yards to a mile, hunting deer to American or African Cape Buffalo, it's a fine cartridge in the 74 Sharps, one of my favorites, I have two rifles so chambered.
