I read the 270 Win. nonsense on here all the time and it is just that.....nonsense. Most is made in jest as no one with a modicum of knowledge would say otherwise.
The 270 Win. is IMHO, one of the very best hunting cartridges ever designed. It works on deer to elk.
I'm a fan of the 270 Win.

I picked up a SC FWT in 270Win a few years ago on GB just for the heck of it. Since then all of my other rifles have been "in the closet".

There have been a couple informal polls here on 24HCF over the past couple years. One on the cartridge used to "Kill the most game". Another on the cartridges used to "Kill elk". 30-06 topped both of those lists. .270 was a close second in both polls. Nothing else was close in either poll.

I made a major score in .277" bullets at a gunshow awhile back consisting of 130 & 150 gr grand slams, 150 gr Nosler solid bases, and a bunch of 130 grain Remington Bronze Point expanding bullets. I can figure it out on my own but was interested in some input from those who have used any of the bullets I listed. So loads ? Results? MB

Jack O'Conner liked the bronze points, I don't but this is based on limited use. He used his classic load of 60 grains of surplus H4831 for the 130 grain bullets, Speer lists 58 grains of IMR 4831 as max so cross reference and work up loads. R26 is ideal for the 150s and works with 130s too go to the Speer or Hodgdon sites for the recipes.
Anything between 4350 and H1000 will work well for that range of bullets. I used R22 but am switching to R16 and R26 once those loads are used up. R23 is an option and may be more available than R26.
The Grand Slams are good bullets, I like the older dual core design which yours probably are. Have not used the 270 solid base bullets but I would section one to see if it is the thick core type or not. The early ones had the thin jacket like the Ballistic tips before they were beefed up. They were fairly frangible, I accidentally hit a doe in the spine too far back and what was left of the back straps would barely make a sandwich. The bullet did take out a pretty good section of spine lengthwise but only the base of the bullet remained.

Tejano thanks for the info. I have a new "used" 270 , a model H-100 High Standard that is on a small ring Husqvarna FN style action. Just zero'ed it this evening with 130 gr nosler solid base reloads featuring 60 grs H-4831. It shoots nice indeed. Even after adding a Vari X ll 3 x 9 it is still around 7.5 lbs. Will shoot it some more but right now all it needs is a sling and ready to go. The barrel on this rifle has irons and a very light taper 22" length. Deer season in a week and 1/2 looking good so far. Hopefully get to work up some loads with th 130 bronze pt and grand slams also. MB

I started out with the old Nosler solid base bullets (back when they had issues) and got off them in a hurry. I went to Speer and shot several deer with them with great results. For some reason Speer got hard to find around where I live so I tried Nosler again (had heard they had changed things) and that is what I have fed all the 270's I have owned since. Funny thing, some of my 270's loved IMR4350 and hated 4831 and vis versa but I have had great success with one of the two in all mine.

I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....
