reliable, somewhat accurate? Do they make a kit that will work on both commander and government size frames? Will there be a difference between the kits for pre 70 and post 70 series guns? Please share any thoughts, Thank you Phil

Are you asking about a conversion kit made by Colt specifically, or a conversion to be used on a Colt-made 1911, or any conversion kit to be used on any 1911? (Just clarifying...) FWIW, I used a Kimber made conversion kit on both a 4" Kimber and a 5" Kimber. It worked flawlessly on both. It functioned with all types of ammo, and the sights stayed zeroed for my ammo of choice. I probably swapped it back forth a few hundred times and never had to re-zero. I sent it over to Jim in Idaho and he tried it out on his gun (can't say what make/model), and I think it worked fine for him. As for utility, I sold mine for the simple fact that it was $300 and in the end, I still only had one functioning firearm at a time. Two guys couldn't go to the range and one shoot .45 ACP while the other shoots .22lr. Nor did I find that the conversion kit made for useful, but cheaper, training with my 1911. Yes, the frame and trigger were the same, but that's where the advantages stop. The slide for the conversion kit is alloy and is a LOT lighter than the steel slide of the .45 ACP. This completely changes the feel and balance of the gun--so much so that you don't feel like you're shooting your 1911. Plus, when loaded, the frame of the gun is lighter with 10 rounds of .22lr than when loaded with 7 or 8 rounds of .45 ACP. And, of course, the sights are different. I like to practice with the exact iron sights I'm going to use on my carry gun. I may be in the minority, but I don't shoot all iron sights the same. It's worth it for me to use my actual sights in practice. So, the conversion kit was not worth it for me. I ended up selling it and buying another Ruger MKII for not much more money and am very happy with my decision. YMMV.

My experience mirrors this exactly. Great idea that just doesn't pan out in reality.

I have a Kimber , a Marvel Unit 1, and a old Colt. They all work well, but the Kimber kit is the one that gets the most use. The Marvel is the most accurate, then the Kimber, and Colt is the expensive Hangar Queen. The polymer mags I got work well and now hold 15 rds . the Kimber fits 70 and 80 series pistols according to their ads. Used to be a bit cheaper than the $350 tag now. I also have the Kadet 22lr kit for My CZ 75B SA, it is almost as pricey as the Marvel, and shoots just as accurate as the Kimber. Like any other pistol, you have to find what they like in ammo, I got lucky and they both seem to eat the cheep stuff at an acceptable level of plinking accuracy. YMMV..

My Ciener conversion unit for my 1911 is extremely reliable and accurate.

Okie John True. I'd rather have two separate guns than one gun with a conversion unit.

I have a Colt Conversion kit and use it fairly often on my S70 Gold Cup and ancient Colt 1911. Works fine, is accurate (not .22 target pistol accurate but plenty good enough for general use), and reliable. My biggest complaint is about cleaning the floating chamber afterwards. That baked on impacted powder fouling is pretty tenacious.

I've got a Colt & a Kimber.
The Kimber is the more accurate of the 2. The Colt functions the best.

Okie John Yep, kind of like Contenders. Once upon a time, people weren't rich. They had, maybe, a shotgun, 22, and 1 or 2 rifles. That's was a good gun supply. So, something that cost 1/2 to 3/4 the cost of a gun made good sense.

or complete pistol from GSG I have that in a Sig branded 191122. I believe it looks better than it shoots. When I boil it down, I use my Ruger semi auto .22... Very reliable, and extremely accurate, and not nearly as much cleaning and lubing.

I have the Kimber 22LR 1911 conversion kit and it works as it should. Accurate but not as accurate as my Valquarzen, High Standard Trophy or Victor but accurate enough
I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

I have had conversion units from Colt, Ciener, Wilson, and Kimber; all were excellent for me. My very early Ciener kit did require some modification to work with my series 80 guns, but Ciener later made exactly the same change and they all work on most guns. In my experience, these conversion units tend to go off without a hitch, but in some cases may require some minor fitting. The Colt units are very reliable, but are a bit higher in maintenance to stay reliable (just clean it). The most accurate kit I have owned was the Kimber which easily out-shot all the others. The least accurate was probably the Colt, but not by much at all...it was far from "inaccurate"...about 3" at 25 yards.
With that said, I personally will NEVER...FREAKING EVER do business or give another dime to JA Ciener; he's a crook and a general POS
