Shaft specifics need to be matched to your swing analysis.
This is actually the most important part of a fitting. Off the shelf clubs are generally uniflex - one size fits all from a flex perspective. Swing analysis and proper shaft flex makes a big difference. No, they’re usually regular, stiff, ladies. Some stores will carry X flex options and some of the higher end stores will carry homemade shaft flex options, usually derived from thousands of years of Native American technology.

Played a round at Marianna Butte today, to try out a new set of Callaway's I got this weekend. The elk are always a problem on the course.... This green was POCKMARKED with elk hoof prints. Pic doesn't do the divots justice, but it was BAD.

I am talking about pre-packaged, off the shelf *men's* sets, lower end clubs - the type beginners buy. They are almost exclusively uniflex.

Somebody shows up to play with me with something that has a uniflex shaft, I’m going back to the bar. I’ve never even heard of such phu ckery.

I'll play with anyone, even new folks learning the sport with an evil uniflex shaft. As long as they know, or are willing to learn the etiquette, I'm good golfing with anyone.

Then STFU. The rest of your statement is superflous bullshit with no real bearing on this discussion other than to massage your own ego. Suckin' on my titties like you wanted me.

A fitting session with a pro can help straighten out a lot of sins.
So can a custom fitted SxS.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to kill a lot of birds with an off the shelf 870.
That's my approach on most things. Not just golf. anyone looking for signature line material?

Here is the real solid truth Deflave:
New players strive to lower their handicap.
Experienced players strive to raise their handicap.
Handicaps aren't for bragging, they are for competition. My only real goal is to make the person I'm golfing with feel bad. Jesus man, they're already spending 3 hours with you, no need to make them feel even worse!
...Actually Sycamore, you are sort of right....

" bought a used set of Pings for my irons. Driver is a Taylor Made. Gap wedges are Clevelands. "
You have good clubs, the lie angle and shafts would be the next question. Just because they are good clubs doesn't mean they are the best for you, but probably not holding you back much at bogey golf.
If you play 3-4 times per week; hit, chip, and putt on the off days; take a lesson every 2-3 weeks; and get the right set of clubs... in 1.5 - 2 years you will be as good as you are going to get. You will win tons of money while the handicap is dropping. After that you, as noted by Uncle Alps, most look for ways to keep it a little higher. Athleticism is one factor, hand eye (not the same) is another, so is mental compatibility with the game. Just about everyone can get to 10-15 without much problem, once one gets to 0-5 or lower...it is all about what you were born with and how much effort you put in.

And playing it, and betting on it! Golf might be the best sport to bet on in all sports, both on the course with buddies, and betting on the pros. Looking forward to the Masters next week. I will have 4 units in play - should be a blast!
