Hi all,
I wanted to share my 2020 bull elk I took a few days ago, with my Winchester 71 in .348.

The shot was about 80 yards, as he was quartering towards me, left to right. The bullet hit him in front of his left shoulder, and went through his body diagonally exiting low in front of his right rear ham. No bone was hit, it exited to the rear of the rib cage. Expansion was evident during the approximate 36" of penetration.

My load was a 250 grain Barnes Original with 57.5 grains of H4350, Winchester case, CCI-BR-2, for 2331 fps.

Thanks to Beretzs and Jorge for load info in previous threads and Beretzs for posting the pictures below.

Manny

Nice job!

I just got my M71 yesterday - delivered at the range, no less!

I also just took delivery of about 250 of the 250gr Barnes...hopefully I will follow in your footsteps next year!

Thanks for posting,

Tim

Outstanding! Well done! glad the load data helped!

Manny,

Good bull and a great rifle!! Thank you for posting.

P.s. you’re hanging around with some pretty shady characters.Might want to keep that rifle locked in the truck while you’re in elk camp...just sayin’

This thread is killing me. All that I have left to do is fire form some brass and figure out my load by dumping a bunch of H4350 into Starline cases with WLR primers and seat a tough 250 grain Alaska Bullet Works Super Bonded Bullet on top. Then I can put on the wool jacket my wife made me out of a wool blanket and my waxed Filson Packer Hat, go to the range and fire up the wood stove in one of the shooting shacks, than see how far away I can reliably hit a 10 inch target using shooting sticks.

But, it is only November and moose season is a long Alaskan winter and 10 months away! Maybe I can take it out in the spring as my brown bear tag is good until May 31st of 2021 and black bears available also. A .348 Ackley Improved should be good bear medicine. By then I should have plenty of trigger time in.

I agree, the OP has a great picture of him the elk and the rifle. Hunting and shooting off of your hind legs like a man. No electronics, just good binoculars and a reliable powerful rifle, that is also the type of hunting I like.

Congrats. Good shooting with an iron sighted levergun and a great result.

I hope you had some help carrying that meat out!
