With a full size mag I always used a bipod. Then went to a homemade rest, or just free handed. Bipod does not balance well, and adds weight. Not that I plan on going to the range with the price of ammo. Just wondering if had to ca falll to prone position & fire will it hurt to rest rifle on mag?

BTW no metal mags. All pmags if that makes a difference.

That's the second thing I do after spraying down my rifles with Campdry.

Not unless you are on a Marine Corps rifle range, in which case you will sharp wack on the back of the head.

Wonder if it would cause a feed problem. I don't believe it would, but never tried to see.

Only if there was some issue with the magazine catch not engaging the cutout in the magazine, which would let the magazine go up too high.

Actually read the other day that magazine resting is to be allowed on the USMC's new combat qualification syllabus.

That was my thought. Would never shoot that way under normal circumstances.

With quality magazines and an in-spec lower receiver, it will not. It's not my preferred method, but it works.

A 40 rounder makes a nice monopod.

Hell yes, I'd just get a 200 rounder and use it in the sitting position.. No need for any other kind of support/rest..

Won’t hurt anything but your neck. That’s why I recommend the 40 round Pmags. Much more comfortable.

We shoot like that on one of our drills, 5 standing, 5 kneeling and 5 prone on a USPSA silhouette at 200 yards, shot for score and time.

You will see no issues with using your magazine as a monopod. Anytime we can add stability, we are better off.

LOL, I've used 30/40 round mags as mono-pods for years, no problems, you can rock to and fro as needed, not a bad quick prone setup.

Seems like a very poor way to rest a rifle and certainly won't do the magazine any good. The bullet point of impact will likely be different as well, assuming the rifle was correctly sighted in from a good rest.

I've only been doing it since 1985.

Never had an issue with it.

My old prone slow fire position was low enough I could have used a 20 for a rest... it was illegal so I had to get higher. Neck was never an issue but I'm 15 years older by now.. lol
