Are the weatherby mk V worth it? I'm looking at one in a 7mm Weatherby. I know the ammo is pricey but I reload.

Yes, 7mm weatherby is a hammer and underrated. The new Weatherby select ammo is not priced much higher then comparable Federal Premium ammo.

Mark Vs, I like'em. Some models are on the heavy side compared to others, but I don't mind.

Also, kudos to the Weatherby custom shop. They have built a few for me and really do a nice job. They have a lot to offer most dont realize. On one rifle, I sent an old pencil thin barreled action and they turned it into a tack driver with new desert camo stock, fluted #2 barrel, and fully coated in black. It's a great handling .300 WBY that solved my issues deciding between the hard recoiling UL and the hefty Accumark. Just right.

From my viewpoint a 150 grain ballistic tip at 3300 FPS and 3100+ with a 160 both chronographed ,not shabby for factory ammo.

No practical advantage over a 7mm Remington magnum but if you want a little ballistic advantage over the 7mm Remington, the 7mm Weatherby is what I would get. To me its more practical than the 7mm Mashburn magnum wildcat thatis pretty popular here on the fire.

I really like Mark Vs. I have a newer Weathermark in 300 Weatherby that I’m really happy with. I wish they’d bring back a full Stainless Rifle instead of just using Cerakote for everything. If they did that I’d add a few more Mark Vs to the safe.

I bought one 2 months ago all stainless fluted barrel 270 WBY that was LNIB from an estate.

I bought one with the Carbon Fiber barrels on it last year in 257wby. The little bit I’ve shot it I’m really impressed. My buddy has one in Wyoming and really likes it as well. I’d buy another one down the road

I used to own one. I used it and it was OK, but the stock just didn't fit me well and I had to lift my head to see through the scope because I have a very thick and short neck.

All the game I shot with it was killed, and any bad experiences I had were the fault of using bullets that broke up, and could not be lain at the feet of either the shell or the rifle.

But overall, I personally think the MK5 is well overpriced. They are VERY strong, well made and very smooth, but the price that is attached makes me look to many other rifles that do everything my MK5 ever did, do it as well and in a few cases better, and cost far less. I like the actions of the Winchester M70 and the Ruger M77 Mk2 both better. In fact I like the old Mauser better too. Sure, 98 Mausers are not as strong, but they are plenty strong enough, as is evident by the fact that Roy Weatherby used German and Belgian Mausers for several years back when he got started.

And my experience with the 7MM Weatherby and the 7MM Remington using my hand-loads and a chronograph has shown me no real advantage of the Weatherby shell over the Remington at all. I also owned a 300 Weatherby at one time and I have owned two 308 Normas, a 300 Win Mag, two 300 H&Hs (still own one of those) and one 30-378 Weatherby. To be totally honest, there are problems with super speed bullets coming apart too much. That is easy to get past by simply using a Barnes X, but those are pretty expensive so they keep me from doing as much shooting as I'd like to do.
At the very best I could never see any real difference in the speed of the kills with any of my 300s and in all cases of killing game at 450 yards and closer, I can't say with any honesty I saw a real or dramatic difference between the hot 300s (including gthe 30/378) and a good 30-06 using a good bullet, in how fast it put down game. And the two 7MM mags Weatherby and Remington, were identical performers in the field too.

So I do like Weatherby MK5s but not enough to buy one, and if I did have one today I'd make a different stock for it. One good thing I can say about them is the Mk5 is the easiest action I ever made a stock for. In terms of difficulty of making stocks from blanks, on a scale of 1 to 10, ........the Mk5 is #1. ........Nothing is easier. THAT is something I do like about them.

So for me, they are not a rifle I would pay the asking price for, especially if I can get a Winchester, Ruger or Mauser instead.

But that's just me................. others love them.
And if you love a MK5 enough to pay their price remember it doesn't have to please me, or anyone else. Just you.

Mine came on a trade, I had a winchester m12 reproduction 20 that would not smooth up and function reliable on skeet doubles after 5 flats and still rough. I traded it for a very slighty used MkV sporter not the deluxe but the satin finished wood and metal one in 270 weatherby mag. Great shooter and have taken 3 of my nicest whitetail bucks with it, works on antelope but way more cartridge for goats than you need. MB

I have a 300 and 340. Both are amazingly accurate with factory ammo they like. I always wished I’d picked the 270wby.... The 7 was never a real draw, and in any event, my STW is faster by 200+FPS.

I had a challenge reloading for my Mark Vs. I could match velocity or accuracy of the factory ammo, but never at the same time. For what it’s worth, mine seemed to prefer flat base bullets over boat tails.

I did have a accumark in 30-378 but it went down the road. The extra 200fps it offered did not justify the additional weight/recoil.

Im a big fan.
