It's a heavy beast but the low light performance is fantastic. If you plan on hunting from a stand or shooting house, it will be great. I wouldn't want it on a rifle I was going to be carrying for miles.

21 ounces or so makes it comparable in weight to other 56mm scopes.

Old, is spot on, the Meopta R1 3-12x56 weighs less than many similar magnified scopes by as much as 25% for some. I have used one and plan to purchase one for my son's deer hunting rifle. The low light capability is excellent and the MeoStar glass will not disappoint. When you add in the price, I think it's a great value. I do some freelance work for Meopta but no sales so I have nothing to gain by passing info along to you. If you call retailers looking for this scope I think you will be able to save some $. For Mil/Le, Meopta offers a very nice program.

It weighs one ounce more than a nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42 that most here laud for being trim and tidy.
I have one and it's great glass, it compares favorably with my Swarovski PH 2.5-10x56 in low light. If you're looking for a low light scope they don't get much better.

R1 has really good illumination , the R2 might be too much of a good thing.
R1 is a very well built scope, I had mine on a few different rifles ranging from 30-06 to 7mm Weatherby and had zero issues with it. Meopta has some of the best customer service in the business . I used them once on a Meopta scope purchased on eBay which had a cracked turret. They replaced it no questions asked.

Any of the Meostar R1 56mms will treat you well. When I got my first meopta, a Meostar 3-10x50, I was reading lots of positives about it, even compared to the likes of S&B, Zeiss, Swaro, etc, and was going to go for a 56mm myself but found a really good deal on the 50.

I don't know about that. If you want to compare Meostar to Zeiss, I'd be looking at the V4 series.
