How do you like that Barrett?
I’m thinking about getting one for next season if I can find a 7-08 with a 21” barrel. Seems a like a nice minimal hassle all weather rifle.

I don't own a 270 caliber but would vote for the .277 caliber wink. My son has a Marlin MR-7 (best design ever made - only produced from '95-'97) and even though we have rifles costing 4x as much, he said this will be his deer rifle forever. I have a .277 cal Rem 700 that has been carried on all of our deer hunts so far and this will be his go-to when he gives his son the MR-7.

I used .300 Magnum with 3-9x42 for years. I bought it when I was young and inexperienced. If I had to do it over again I would choose: 6,5x57, 7x57, 6,5x55, 7x64 or 7,62x51. Any of those would do, in practical terms the differences are infinitesimal.

I have 4 deer tags this year and so far I have filled 2 of them. I also had one Antelope tag which I filled and I have one elk tag yet to fill .
Deer #1 was shot with a Remington M141 in 35 Remington. #2 was a Marlin 336 in 30-30. Pronghorn buck was shot with a 30-06 M1 garand

I have several other rifles I may use for deer #3 and #4.
It's a pleasant dilemma------- to need to choose only 2 from the list. All on my "deer-list" have only iron sights.

5.56
6.5 Mannlicher
270
303 British
300 Savage Remington M81
300 Savage Savage 99
9.3X57
I don't exclude the 3 rifles above yet either, a 30-06 from the M1, the 30-30 or the 35 Remington........

Bullets I have loaded are
60 Gr Partition for the 5.56,
156 grain PPU for the 6.5X54,
150 grain RN Core-Lokt for the 270,
180 gr Core-Lokt for the 303,
150 gr Core-Lokt for the Savage 99 300,
180 grain Nosler BT for the 300 Savage Remington 81,
285 Gr RN for the 9.3X57,
170 gr Core-Lokt for the 30-30
200 grain Core-Lokt for the 35 Rem,
and 150 grain Nosler BT for the M1 garand.

My elk hunt is a meat hunt and in open country, so I will use a scoped rifle for that, and I will probably just get out the Mauser in 300 H&H with 200 grain Partitions, but I may use my 9.3X62 Mauser with 286 grain Hornadys or my 9.3X74R, Ruger #1 with 286 grain Partiutions.

Decisions decisions................................What say you folks?

No .308 Winchesters?
Marlin XS7 in .308. Nothing fancy and it "takes a licking and keeps on ticking".

Ruger #1A. 7x57.
Used plenty of other rifles/cartridges over the past 60 years but ended up with this three years ago. It will be my last and forever deer combo. Fits me like a glove, mild recoil, gives 1” groups at 100 meters and with 145 Speer HCs at just under 2800 fps performs with deadly finality on deer sized critters.

Most of this season's hunting so far has been with a couple of .308 rifles. The two times I got totally skunked and saw nothing were the two times I carried something else. Maybe it's just going to be a .308 kind of year.

It’s raining lightly and it is literally rusting before my eyes this morning. Don’t care because I’m getting it coated in a couple of months.

you can get Dura coat in a spry bottle with the hardner for $60 and do it yourself. you will have enough for 3 rifles or shotguns but must have them ready being when you release the hardner you only have maybe 2 days before it dries in the can
I did a guys Browning A5 shotgun that looked like it was retrieved from the titanic. sanded the rust off washed it down 5 times with brake fluid and the degreaser that came in the package. put 3 coats on it and did my Sig 30-06 and a shotgun. the A5 looks like new cause I got the color that mimics bluing. the guy loves it

I killed deer with 270 and 30-06. They still haven't told me what they prefer to be shot with, probably because they're dead no matter what they get hit with.
