Among World War II military Mauser 98s and 98ks rifles (my interest pertains to the actions) sold to Turkey, assembled in Turkey from German parts, and made in Turkey I have questions.

1. Are the actions all large ring?

2. As best you can from my limited information, does an action with the following information on receiver ring have a straight bolt handle, or 98k-style turned down bolt handle?

AS FA

ANK (crescent beneath star) A??

K • KALE

1942

3. Are large ring military Mauser 98 parts comparably interchangeable regardless where manufactured — that is, however interchangeable German-made 98 parts are with all other German-made 98 parts, are parts of Turkish 98s and 90ks just as interchangeable?

the fun begins
1) yes and no ; some are German large ring / some outside dimension large ring but use small ring barrel ( K KALS ) /1903 are different again
2) most have straight , but some bent
3) if you havent guess by now yes and No
depends on what your thinking of doing ; a K. KAl is mostly standard large ring with a small ring barrel , A Remington 700 barrel can be rethreaded to small ring and used on these
the triggerguard on some turks do not have the retaining screws so they can dress up the look of a sportier IF the stock has not been cut for military bottom metal
there is lost more information on differences you will need to do lot of digging

The K.Kale marked Long rifles came with straight handled bolts. The K.Kale marked short rifles came with bent bolts.

The majority of the 98's used by Turkey were Large Rings but you will occasionally find WWI era Kar98a types as well. These of course having a Small Ring diameter.

Despite Mauser 98 actions being produced by myriad manufacturers they are amazingly interchangeable with regards to parts. You will run into problems with things like firing pins and cocking pieces and some Firing Pins had rounded grooves and some had flat grooves at the end to retain the CP. the CP's were also flat or round bottomed in the grooves to match. Bottom metal, while all having the same hole spacing, obviously differ depending on the cartridge the action was designed for. Lastly, extractors differ slightly depending again on the cartridge they were designed for. Rim thickness and extractor groove cuts varying depending on the cartridge thus the extractors also varying for proper fit. There are other slight differences dependent upon the specific model but on the whole over 99% can be considered interchangeable.

I think the bolts on the 1903 large ring small shank versions that WA11 mentions are shorter than the standard 98. If I'm not mistaken those actions are similar to the 1909 Peruvian actions with the high clipper strip slot. Possibly the same bolt as a 1924 Mexican intermediate?

Most bolts are interchangeable, BUT the headspace probably won't match. There are different bolt lengths though.

Where in MT are you?
