Picked this up for youngest son's first hunting rifle (he is 22) $650. Semi-fancy wood. How'd I do? Brand new in box.
It's his early Xmas present cause we'll be in TX at Xmas and he'll be working in Grand Junction. lol.

I reload for 30-06 and I've got some special loads that I think this rifle will like.

Any recommendations for a cost efficient scope? He'll be using it next year after he grads college in Grand Junction.
He'll be using it here in MT for 100-300 yards, Elk or Deer.

He is a very experienced shooter, my range buddy since he was 10. He never showed an interest in hunting until this fall but too late, he has to be licensed in MT by April so we are scouting out places to hunt here in NW MT when he is home for TG week-end.

I have these rings coming. Leupold std Winchester medium height rings.

Well... you already bought the rings are they 1” diameter or 30mm???

You want to dial or set and forget?

Looking for ballistic reticle? Dot reticle? Or something standard like a duplex or #4

That's a great choice I like straight 6x myself, the old Vari X llc 3x9 has also served me well over the years. Mb

The 6x would be dandy. Also check out the deals on Meopta. I just got the 6X Meopro and it is really nice, a little bigger and heavier than the Leupold but really nice optically and I dig the German #4 reticle. Don't go too big or too heavy the 30-06 is an all rounder bar none, the scope should be too.

A lot of my rifles wear 6x scopes or 2.5-8x maybe a third of them the rest mostly 3-9x of some version. Only my 257 Weatherby has an objective larger than 42mm with another Meo-pro 4-14x-44mm.

Might keep an eye out for a used 6x42 Leupold but it is only slightly better than the 6x36 and weighs more.

I have one of those, but its on my seldom used 1981 Savage 99 in .308. Might have to sacrifice it for his rifle and get some new glasses for the S99. smile

Id say you did quite well on this rifle. Is it a Portugal or S.C made rifle?

Windage adjustable? Why not get a good set like the DD's? They look and work great on a model 70.. Also, I don't see a pic of your rifle? Show and tell man.. If its got a pretty stock, it might look like this one. Oh and this one has DD's:

That's some fine looking wood, sir. His is not as nice and I can't share a pic because the wife wrapped it up in christmas wrapping paper. When he opens it tomorrow I'll take some photos.

What's the barrel length? The angle in the photo is making it look shorter to me than I'm assuming it really is.

I’d send back the windage-adjustable bases/rings, get dual dovetails with medium height Burris Signature rings.

A Burris FFII 3-9x40mm ballistic plex would be what I’d put on that rifle; that or a Leupold 6x42mm.

Great rifle there awesome Christmas present!
