I shot this cow this afternoon. I think she's older than I am. She's in the cooler for a couple weeks tenderizing.
She was easy to get home anyway. I was able to drive my Razor right to her, drag her up out of a canyon, and winch her into the pickup whole.

This one wasn't dry. I didn't see the calf but she had milk.

I got this in Idaho unit 45 which is a major wintering area. There are more elk than the land can handle and they pay out millions to ranchers for depredation every year. They've issued 2500 cow tags between this unit and the next door unit 52. Last week the elk arrived for the winter and there are lots of them. One rancher counted about 200 in one of his fields on Thursday. Yesterday 5 of us got 4 cows. The other guy should have had one but he borrowed his brother's 300 WM. It turned out that brother has it sighted in for 400 yds. At 100, it's 3" high. The elk was at 300 yds and he held a bit high and shot over it...3 times. I doubt it was bad shooting. He's a retired Army Ranger officer with LOTS of shooting experience in the 1st Gulf war. He knows how a gun works. He just didn't know the gun he was using.

Anyway, I talked to quite a few other hunters yesterday and most had elk in their trucks. While getting permission to hunt is usually just a phone call and a rancher's blessing, there's also a lot of BLM land. All 4 of ours were on public land around the ranches. One ranch we were on has a sign that says what amounts to 'Welcome hunters. Please call before entering. XXX-XXX-XXXX' Aren't cell phones a great invention? Permission on the spot.

Congrats! Hopefully she “tenderizes”. If not, maybe grinding will help.......a little! whistle memtb

Those front teeth have chewed a lot of grass. You can see the ivory in the top photo. It's well exposed.

Big old lead cow I took several years ago was as big as some bulls, but aging her like that and she was plumb good table fare.

I built a cooler using a window a/c and a Coolbot. I keep it at 37. You can keep one up to a couple weeks at that temp. I also have 6 or 8 bushels of apples in there now. Maybe they'll give the meat a nice fruity flavor. laugh

I shot an old cow several years ago that had cavities in both of her ivories.
Old cow I shot this year was dry, but both ivories in good shape.

My wife killed a big old cow like that 2-3 years ago. Aged her for around 10 days, and the meat turned out great. She was so big we still have around 40 pounds.

I got a dry cow bigger than this one 2 years ago. It was VERY good eating. I hope this one is the same. This one has no fat on it.

Congrats! I'm hoping to draw another cow elk tag next year. Got one a few years ago. The hunt was fun, the meat was delicious!

Love that description of being able to get her out whole. smile
