I put the barrel on a Montreal guard action from a sportorized rifle, 1649xx front of receiver stamped S R

And why would you take the barrel off a MONARCH??? Has to be a story behind this. The rifle was part of the Wes Adams group.

I purchased a rifle with this barrel, the rifle has/had special order pistol grip stock with 4 point checkering was also drilled and tapped. The receiver had marks consistent with barrel removal. I lettered that rifle came back no special features but chambered in 32-40 . Guessing a 32-40 monarch was more valuable than a 303 sav and the two barrels were swapped? So if that rifle was part of the Wes Addams collection what was the caliber? And when did savage offer the 32-40 what year?

This one was made in 1903 ( I think ) I'll try to dig out the serial # tomorrow Looks like Style 1B Serial 29.66X. SRC, Square bolt.

When I first posted about this years ago someone here had a folding pamphlet on the rifle? Who was that I am sure the pamphlet still exists

From my posts looks like I purchased in 2004, I remember Mark Benson? Looked at the rifle because of the scope passed on it.

Most interesting! Rifle was built with a ,303, !/2 & !/2 barrel. Given that the address is a Style 2 (correct for the original barrel) and that the rifle has been back to Savage in 1912,1918 and finally shipped in 1923, it would be nice to know the address on the current barrel.

Were there two barrels originally made? Was the barrel replaced with the .32-40 then refurbished back to the original .303?

Given that George Adams once owned that rifle I Know that before his dispersal he prepared a "pamphlet" for each of his guns. I saw that accumulation of pamphlets in Tulsa. Possibility that he could contribute info re the gun. I no longer have his phone info but maybe somebody here does and could contact him.

I photographed 45.264 for my upcoming book. Unfortunately I didn't photograph the barrel address. It is a 303 and it has the fine engraving on the barrel.
Barrel swapping at the factory for high end rifles may not have been uncommon. As I mentioned earlier in this post, I have an F engraved 1899 that letters as having spent four years at the factory. It was originally a 30-30 with half octagon but the barrel was changed to a full octagon 303 before it was shipped.

Interested in pictures of the barrel engraving. Oak leaf?

Interesting they are very similar but different , could you tell if that barrel had the leaves on the side flats mostly hidden by the wood?

I don't have a pic of that but I think they were. The higher grades of engraving tend to have some variation. This is also true of the 99K's. William Gough who is credited with engraving the K's had a number of people working for him and the engraving on the K's varies quite a bit probably due to whoever engraved a particular rifle.

Just for clarification, the Monarch used the grape leaf pattern vs an oak leaf. The A2 pattern used the grape leaf, as well.

Before the Model K it was not common for the barrel to be engraved. I think the Monarch was the only one that was. Perhaps that was to allow for easier barrel swapping...?

The 1899 303 that I have is:

Style 2 address Barrel is a light weight 19 3/4 inch long with the front site dove tailed into the barrel. Serial # 70-404

I have been told that this would be a saddle ring gun, but it is not

What do the experts think.
